... birthday earlier this year finally brings the curious but initially shy young boy out of his shell. He whisks the photo down the carriage to show his Mum, also onboard. I give him a British ten pence piece once he returns my phone. He holds on to the coin for an hour before he sets it down carefully on his bunk. "Your family is fair and very pretty." With this approval from his grandmother, the boy (still too shy to tell us his name) moves on from keeping us topped up ...

... on the train, although I did have a scary moment when I was coming out of the metro station and the machine took my ticket, before deciding it was out of order and wouldn't open. It did let me through maybe 30 seconds later, but it was quite scary! How would I explain to the ticket person that I did buy a ticket - honest! - but that the machine swallowed it, in Chinese, before the train came? It was absolutely fine in the end, I was just tired and slightly panicked!

... a popular, decent-priced, Chinese hotel chain not far from where we are. I'm generally on the hairdo bandwagon but I figured whattheheck. We stayed there but in the end, hostels are 90 percent of the time so much better than hotels; I mean, unless you have tons of money to waste and want to. I never fall into this category.
