Melody and I traveled from Wellington on the Kaitaki run by Interislander, the crossing was smooth although some people we met on the Ferry said it can get quite rough. The water up the Queen Charlotte Sound was like glass and we had a large pod of dolphins escort us most of the way, there were also plenty of seals to be seen.
After leaving the Ferry it was only a short drive to The Yacht Club Hotel where we booked in. Even though the tempature was cool it was very sunny and we decided to ...

... We could see for miles over the twinkling blue water and green hills, and the yachts moored in the marina. We continued on, stopping at high up points with views of the whole sound, and beaches where we could see into the clear turquoise water and see the fish. The sand was golden and the boats looked like they were floating in mid-air because the water was so clear. It was so peaceful and tranquil. We ate our lunch with a gorgeous view of a cove with ...
Picton, South Island, New Zealand angela_louise... I had a go at driving on the way back to Collingwood. I was helped by the fact we had an automatic so no complicated clutch/gear changing to learn!! As long as I didnt crash we were fine!! It was mostly fine, I did find it hard to stay in the right position on the road. Also, New Zealand has loads of one lane bridges and there was one moment when I forgot to give way but it was ok in the end. I got up to 70km/h but that was ...
Picton, South Island, New Zealand wolliferI never expected our ferry boat ride to the South Island to be so amazing. We loaded our hippie van and walked up the stairs to the top deck. The views of the coastal areas were all photo shots of unique coastal areas with Alaska-like qualities, but not as much snow capped glaciers and perhaps more boats. We cruised across the channel taking pictures of every portion of the coast, the water, the dolphins ...
Picton, South Island, New Zealand capitainesj... but just as much energy if not much more. they had spend the holidays in the south island riding quad bikes, chopping wood and going horseback across private farmland. we got to talking and after maybe an hour of conversation, they wrote down their names and info and insisted we come and stay with them on their farm! i know eunice and i don't exactly look like lunatic axe murderers, but to invite strangers you just met into your home ...
Picton, South Island, New Zealand euniceandbyoung... common way of sourcing seafood. Incidently, absolutely huge live green lipped mussels are for sale in the supermarkets for sale by the kilo at a price less than the cost of a bag of crisps (about 80p per kilo). In summer time the done thing is to buy a bag of mussels and a bottle of "Sauvie" (Sauvignon Blanc) at the supermarket and head of to the beach to barbeque the mussels for a picnic - fast food as it should be ...
Picton, South Island, New Zealand candcthai... huge a good two hundred at least i think, all swiming around in a big group. The boat dropped us off in their path and we jumped in. God it was amazing. Loads of tehm just came up really close to about a foot or so and were just swimming along beside us for ages. They were jumping out of the water right in front of us and doing twirls and massive leaps out of the water. It was brilliant although the trip back was was brutal for waves and the ...
Picton, New Zealand raycoleman... the guy at the hostel who made my reservation for me the night before only booked me on the bus until Blenheim. So now I am in Blenheim. When I tried to find the hostel earlier today I turned right on a street I should have turned left on making me more sweaty and tired than I had been prior to my arrival in Blenheim. The people at the hostel where I will be ...
Blenheim, New Zealand lisajallen... falls off the train. The viewing car is really open. It has rails to hold onto around the perimeter. And few posts down the center of the carriage that you can also cling to. The enclosed part comes to waist level, the rest is open. Out here in this wind blown car you really feel the speed of the train (perhaps it is going faster then I expected). Trying to get your camera up to take a picture while rocking along and being blown by winds is ...
