Photos include the trip from Thimphu to Wangdue Phodrang. Dzonkha is the name of the official language of Bhutan; Dzonkhak is the name for a district (both Paro and Thimphu are the name for towns but also the districts they are in as well). Dzong is the name for the fortress/temple/government administration building for the Dzonkhak. Got that?
Wangduephodrang, Bhutan jskendall... The evening highlight included an adventure trip out of the resort and into the streets of Wangdue, to find som elocal food. We walked along the dirt roadside in complete darkness (no streetlights here), peering into the wooden shaks that lined the roadway. This is how shops appear here, with theor owners waiting patiently for a customer or some other distraction. We eventually settled on a nicely stocked shop and made our ...
Wangduephodrang, Bhutan srossb1971... in finding her in the large crowds over the course of the weekend! We opted not to stay in cosume, and instead packed everything up and went shopping next for silk scarves that would be our offering to the fifth King at the public ceremonies the next day. Back at the hotel, it was dinner and drinks and back to the room just in time to catch the US Election results which I watched in earnest for several hours before nodding off to sleep.
Thimphu, Bhutan srossb1971... to me sing OM !!! But the guide had so he came over and laughed, which kind of helped, because I pulled myself out, and onto the temple we went. I didn't get the name of this one, but it was old looking so we did the right thing and left a donation. I kind of felt a little sorry for the monks here as twenty of them sleep in the one room, and they did tell me it gets cold, maybe this was why I did what I did !!! We left there and had a ...
Wangduephodrang, Bhutan uncle_davros... same level as the Dalai Lama. There were some nice paintings around and his throne was made of gold. Around the courtyard there were loads of kids dancing as they were practising for the centenary celebrations. It was quite nice to watch, but most were a little of the same !!! Khamsum Yulephelma Chorten Off we drove again, until we arrived at the next site. Khamsum Yulephelma Chorten is on top of a hill, and after yesterdays walk, my knees felt like ...
Punakha, Bhutan uncle_davros... were also very non-Swiss. Going to school, visiting a religious building, interacting with the government, meeting with tourists, and working in a business (pretty much everything besides lying on your couch) requires the Bhutanese to wear traditional dress. As most of them still dress in traditional dress, and not just at Oktoberfest. This contrasts sharply with the Swiss. The woman's traditional kira (silk wrap around dress and silk short jacket cut in a robe sort of style) and ...
Paro, Bhutan jenandjeffmilum... breakfast was worth waiting for! We drive on several more hours until we reach Wangdi. There we have lunch at a riverside hotel with views of the Wangdi Dzong. I inspect both the breakfast and lunch hotels as possible places for my future groups to stay. During the long drive our guide fills us in on some of the more interesting aspects of life in Bhutan, such as how people determine where on their property to build ...
Thimphu, Bhutan wareameye... Our guide explains the symbolism of the various statues, and the offerings placed before them. There is an intense spirit of reverence about the place. We trek back down the mountain, stopping for tea at a cafeteria with a wonderful view of the Monastery. There we capture our first group photograph. Lunch is a quick buffet at a restaurant on the road back to Paro. We return to the city in time to watch the processional of monks and singers and ...
Thimphu, Bhutan wareameye... good fortune for the next two years but, hypnotic as h** movements w**e, my attention was drawn to the fascinating expressions on the faces around me: the children wide-eyed in their absorption, the women evidently engrossed in the ritual, and the men... well, some of them w**e paying attention, but more of them w**e just being men, lurking in the background, swigging from bottles of cloudy and evidently potent brew ...
