Can Tho and the Mekong Delta

A short four hour bus trip took us west from Saigon to Can Tho in the heart of the Mekong Delta. A small city of about 330,000, it is situated on the bank of the Mekong and acts as the main hub for the passing of the fruits of agriculture into the main body of the country.

We checked into the Xuan Mai, not the nicest place we have stayed but our 7th floor room gave us some great views of the town. The owner was very pushy though and tried to talk us into over paying substantially more ...

How did Chris and Rach cross the road?? they didnt

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh city quite late so on the first night Chris went in search of some quick take away grub close to our hotel. It's not muggers you need to worry about if you are alone on an evening, it's the ladies of the night!! Despite all the female attention (the asian women love a lanky ginner - or just western men in general, cha ching $$) Chris returned a short while later with some pizza and we got an early night.

First stop the following day was the Benh Thanh market l...

... I mean the most amount of traffic I have ever seen in my life. Key to crossing the road here is, step out in front of the traffic and they while avoid you(hopefully). Nae easy getting used to that method.

So finally getting to the hotel and it has the big 4 (Air Con, hotwater, TV and Fridge) I have had two of the four in Thailand, I have even had none of the big four but all four for $10!!!!!!!!! WOW! I might like this place afterall. Slept all afternoon than ...

After a whole hour of listening to him talk, non-stop, I was ready to throw myself out the window. Thankfully, he shut up as we arrived at some random touristy craft shop which the company has sneakily but unsurprisingly thrown onto the itinerary. I went to the toilet, wandered down long aisles of ceramic tat, thoroughly disinterested, then left the building. It was ...

Not all tourist attractions are nice

I finished up my time in Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly, and typically still known as, Saigon). It was a strange place, there wasn't masses to see as a tourist really, possibly as a lot of the older buildings were destroyed during the war, as it was heavily focussed on this area. Also the traffic was by far the craziest we have seen so far, they just never stopped, and during my relatively short time there I saw several minor accidents ...

... to all the Caucasians to whom I have said white men can’t dance – Asian men, Vietnamese men specifically are worse. I was working on the preconceived notion that Asians must have rhythm even for western music – UH UH! These guys are terrible they gyrate and spin and rotate but it is obviously associated with some music in their heads because it has nothing to do with the techno stuff coming out of the system. And of ...

Colonel Sander's and the white devils

Overall, Saigon (HCMC) was a bit disappointing, apart from the wer museum, which was actually really good, the Kuchi tunnels was abit of a venture for not very much; our guide was also a ranting veteran who couln't decide who he hated more, the Americans, or the Viet Cong! We decided that as it was our first night in a new country, we would go out clubbing, this turned out to be quite an experiance! We cruised on the back of motos from club to club, trying to find somewhere with people ...
