... teachers at my school for a goodbye dinner at "La Bamba" the cheap Mexican restaurant near our school. One teacher is moving to Thailand and the other is moving to another school in Shanghai to work as a Director of Studies. I was the usual fine evening at La Bamba, full of 5 kuai beers and decent Mexican food. Today I decided to go to Hangzhou to visit a friend. The train ride is about an hour if you take the high speed (G) train. During the long cab ride from the ...

    Yangshou to Hangzhou

We woke early and from the room and balcony we watched the sun grow stronger in the clear air on the mountains opposite, while a fisherman quietly punted himself about just below the weir. Enjoying the cool morning air, we went down and had breakfast beside the river and were surprised to see punts starting to drift past even at this early hour. At 8.00am the train left and soon we were reaching speeds of up to 300 km/h although the ride was so smooth you would hardly think you were going that fast. A scrolling sign kept everybody informed ...

... had a very good time. Everybody went to bed quite early tired of the oxygen overflow (we are not used to that much fresh air anymore living in Shanghai…). The next morning I had my first Chinese breakfast with sweet and savoury dumplings and noodle soup. It was really good! After that we had our first Tai Chi (chin. ...

Tea Villages West of Xihu.. by bicycle...

So "Little Al" has been planning a trip to Hangzhou--then to Xihu lake--then the mountains west of the lake and their Tea villages. Folks, this is a long long bike ride for a fat old guy to attempt. After 22 miles into the trip, we get to ride up mountains and see the tea villages! a prospect I was not enjoying the idea of. But since I had nothing else to do I decided to try it.

We started at our favorite bike shop where my trusty ...
