Took a day trip to the car-free island of Gulangyu (pretty sure Gulangyu means Gulang Island, so I said Island twice, but oh well). The ferry to get there was an absolute mob scene and didn't bode well for the island being a peaceful escape from Xiamen. However, once I got off the ferry, I realized that the island was more than big enough for the crowds to disperse. Less than one week left here in beautiful Xiamen before I hop aboard a giant aircraft headed back for the States. The past few weeks have been incredibly fantastic full of cultural experiences and so much learning. ... flashcards and quizzing ourselves on all the provinces, we saved some time to go exploring. Lots of vendors, beach camping, sand concerts, free Chinese plays, a million light up ring toss games, plenty of couples, squid on a stick, inflatable hamster balls people played in while in the ocean, some fireworks, a couple paper lanterns, and plenty of laughs later, we came back to our rooms with smiles on our faces and oh so many new memories.
