Historical Traveler Reviews of Wyndham San Jose Hotel
Make sure construction is over!
from gottman
This hotel has the potential to be nice. They were doing major renovations during my stay. If they would have let me know about this construction ahead of time i would not have stayed here
Decent hotel for the price
from daveSiliconValley
I've stayed at the Wyndham twice recently and found the hotel to be a reasonable choice for the price. The lobby area is nice and the restaurant is quite good for a hotel of this level. The rooms are decent, but nothing great - clean and comfortable, but slightly worn. The bathrooms were reasonably clean also, but clearly not in prime condition. The area is not very good for walking to restaurants or attractions, but close to the airport and freeways. I would recommend this hotel at a price around $80 per night, but there are much nicer hotels if you are willing to pay more.
Decent but some problems
from Rebemdee
I booked the hotel at hotels for my sister and her two young children. I called to make sure they would get a non-smoking room with two beds. The receptionist said they weren't busy so it shouldn't be a problem, but declined to take the reservation name to make sure. The lobby and grounds are well maintained. My sister was placed on the 2nd floor, overlooking the pool. We were told pool hours were 10am-10pm, and there is a sign posted that states the same. My sister was up at 10:30 pm, listening to teenagers screaming in the pool. She called downstairs and was told it closed at 11:00 pm, just be patient. She demanded her room be changed, as her two children weren't sleeping either. They moved her to the other side of the 2nd floor, overlooking a very noisy parking lot full of yelling drunk hotel guests. None of them got any sleep. I offered to change her hotel, but she decided to speak to management. She told them she had a long flight the next day, as they were heading to Europe, and she had two very grumpy children to take to an afternoon wedding that day, and she was exhausted. They put her on the 9th floor, which can only be accessed with a special card. It was quiet and the room was nice. I think the rooms were remodeled from past reviews, because although there were some stains and other signs of wear, the fabrics were bright and modern, and overall looked nice. The pool area is a bit worn down; all the chairs have rust marks. I had to ask for towels to be brought out, as you can't bring your room towels down and there were no pool towels in the box for them in the work out room, but that was done quickly.
If you choose to stay at this hotel I would highly recommend you make sure you get a floor fairly high up, and if it's warm and people will be using the pool, make sure it isn't overlooking the pool because they don't enforce the hours and are not interested in quieting very noisy guests. I think this hotel is fine and the price was right, at about $80/night before taxes. It's right on the light rail so it makes carless transport easy. However, I think management has a long way to go in making it a great hotel. Be ready to speak with management if your stay isn't going well.
Not worth the money!

The hotel looks nice on the outside, but the room we got was kinda run down. The furniture looked decent, but the carpet got soaked when it rained one night. The shower was old. It's a decent hotel, but not worth for the price we paid for.
Great hotel -- would recommend

I recently stayed at the Wyndham Hotel in San Jose for the Silicon Valley Football Classic and thoroughly enjoyed my visit. The rooms were spacious and well decorated. The room service was great and the big terry cloth robes provided were an added luxury. We slept very peacefully and didn't hear a peep put of any of the other guests the entire time. Plus, I noticed they are renovating the rooms and the fabric samples and paint colors looked very nice. I would say the Wyndham is great and getting better!
There has got to be a better airport hotel for the money!
from hipmamatravels
I drove around the San Jose airport area hoping to find a nice place to spend the night before flying out early the next morning. No access to the internet or I would have known better than to stay here! Like the other reviews said, the outside and lobby looked nice but the rooms are awful. Torn and stained bedding and upholstry, dirty floors, missing switches for the lamps, noisy AC etc. The only nice thing in the room was a comfy work chair at the desk. All this for $125 a night! Yikes! I couldn't wait to leave. As a single woman traveler I did not feel safe walking around this area. There were a couple seedy restaurants and the rest of the businesses are bail bond shops. Must be close to the jail. Great!
Can you find your way away from San Jose...

I've been here for 7 days (July 16, 2004). I tagged along with my husband while he was here on business so I could get some R&R during the day. The only plus for this hotel so far is the shower. The water pressure is great, so the spa shower head is great. Other notables: you get USA Today delivered to your door each day and you can pay $45 for 7 days of high speed internet service (otherwise it's $12/day). I used the internet each day to work remotely. We had a power outage for a few minutes and I almost lost my work. Oh, the towels are thick and absorbent. There is a coffee pot, blow dryer, iron, and ironing board in the room which we found useful. The positives stop here. The phones, which I utilize heavily, are awful. They are full of static and none of the shortcut buttons work on either of the 2 phones (1 at desk and other bedside). The volume is always too low and the number pad doesn't work well on either. Since the shortcut buttons don't work, I have to call the front desk to be connected to the voice mail. The TV color is awful (too much color). There are no buttons to control the TV settings. The volume fluctuates from station to station and between commercials - very frustrating. You have to jiggle the lamp to turn it on. You can tell that they have done some renovations, but they failed to include the electrical, audio, and video equipment.
The lobby is basic, but nice. The front desk staff is accommodating and were able to give basic information about the rail system. However, they could not recommend any particular restaurant in the city. If you stay in San Jose, please try Lou's Village. The food is excellent although the location doesn't seem too safe (San Jose looks like it is stuck in a 70's time warp, except for the silicon companies areas).
The restaurant, San Fresco, is light and has bright decor. The room furniture is updated, but the bathroom is another story. The tile is chipped and the toilet seat needs to be replaced. The toilet doesn't flush completely unless you hold down the lever. These are small things, but they become a big nuisance by day 3 of 7. The vanity is the smallest vanity I have ever seen in a hotel. There is literally no room to put anything on it. The coffee pot takes up one side! The bed linen is below par (a little scratchy). The pillows are tiny and lumpy.
The location is not convenient to restaurants if you want to walk. There is a chinese restaurant and a japanese restaurant across the street. The chinese restaurant was just ok. The light rail system is across the street, but I didn't have the nerve to use it. It doesn't look extremely safe around here. A taxi to the mall or anywhere is $20. Also, there is no drug store or shopping center close by if you need extras.
They have a small workout facility overlooking the pool. The treadmill needs the belt replaced badly, but it works. Today, the A/C was out, so it was a little warm while walking the treadmill.
I didn't get in the pool but it looked clean. The weather here has been perfect each day.
I ate at the hotel's San Fresco restaurant 2 days for lunch. The salmon sandwich with the fresh fruit was good. The fresh fruit, especially the pineapple was excellent. I had the same waiter both days and he was very accommodating. Today, I missed the lunch hour and had to order from the bar. BIG MISTAKE. The bartender was rude when I asked him to use something other than his hands to handle the lemons that I requested (and this was after a generous tip for nothing). He had just handled money and I told him that it was not sanitary or safe to handle food with his hands while handling money. That was the last straw. I can't wait til morning to leave. We drive to San Francisco tomorrow. I hope the Pan Pacific Hotel in Union Square is a much better experience!
Don't believe it

Do not think that just because the Director of Safety and Security makes you a promise and gives you his business card that this means it will be done. I had a very nice pair of pants torn and a scratch to my leg during our company christmas party, year before last, from defective furniture in the ball room. I was informed by the director of safety that I should buy replacement pants and bring the receipt to the hotel for repayment. I did as instructed and have not received anything from them in over two years!!! I cannot seem to contact anyone who gives a darn at the Wyndham Hotel. Do not think you are safe or that a Director's promise will mean anything at the Wyndham Hotel. I was not safe and their promise was unfulfilled

The Wyndham looks nice on the outside and the lobby is attractive, however the guest rooms are another story. We stayed in the Wyndham for two weeks and our sheets were never changed, the floor was never vacuumed and someone else's fingernail clippings were on the floor.
There was a quarter inch layer of dust under the chair by the desk. The wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling. The bedspread had holes in it.
The hallway carpet was never cleaned and most of the pattern was worn away. Local phone calls were .75 cents. Room service was way over priced (12.00 for continental breakfast). Don't even think of having them do your laundry. It was 4.50 to have one shirt cleaned, PLUS 50%.
Internet access was 12.00 per hour. The only positive thing I can say is that the staff was very friendly and the maid service will remember any request that you make, such as extra sugar for coffee etc.. We discovered that we could have spent another 5 or 10 dollars a night and had a much better accommodations somewhere else. We won't be going back.
Sleepless Nights
from A TripAdvisor Member
If you need a good nights rest while in San Jose, don't stay at the Wyndham.
I have stayed at the Wyndham San Jose on 4 trips. 2 out of the 4 nights I didn't get a wink of sleep. The hotel is VERY noisy. The first sleepless night was due to the Michigan Baskeball Team, who was staying here for the final 4 playoffs. They didn't arrive until 11:00 p.m. Why were they put on my floor? They weren't being extremely loud, but with the construction of the hotel you could hear every step and voice of the 6'9"+ players. Isn't it common sense that a group of 30 college basketball players might be a little noisy, so putting them on their own floor or something might make sense?
The second sleepless night a similar situation. 6 young men checked into the rooms adjancent to mine. For some reason I was in a room with 2 adjoining doors. Through these doors you can hear everything going on next door. The new arrivals weren't being loud, but due to the poor construction I could hear everything going on. They arrived at 10:00 and checked out at 4:00 a.m. Needless to say - no sleep for me.
Why can't the Wyndham distinguish between a business traveler and a non-business traveler?
