8-10 Higashi Kannon-Machi Hiroshima, Hiroshima, Chugoku, Japan, 733-0032, 082-503-3191
Checked out of the Gimmond Hotel, and caught the subway to Kyoto train station, and got on the 7:50am super-express Shinkansen bound for Hiroshima, which headed through Osaka, Kobe (famous for the beef), Himeji (which we will be coming back to in a week or so) and a few other smaller towns. Overall it was just short of a 2 hour trip. Not real pleasant, as it was pretty much fully booked. When we arrived in Hiroshima station we followed the World Friendship Centre guidelines and took a tram (o...
Hiroshima, Chugoku, Japan apatMiyajima today. Its been raining heavily all night, but there are patches of blue sky as we leave the WFC, so we were hoping that we might get lucky with the weather. First on the agenda was breakfast at the WFC. Yanky style coffee, fruit, cereal, toast, yoghurt and juice. Quite a good spread. Our hosts may be American and they may be wannabe hippies, but we couldn't fault their hospitality. Also at the table with us was the British guy who had to sleep on the floor of the very dining room we...
Miyajima, Chugoku, Japan apatI left my main bag in Kyoto and went traveling light for a few days. My first stop was the mountain top town of Koya-san which is a centre for Japanese Buddhism and one of the most sacred places in Japan. The journey there involved a lovely train ride through valleys and then a funicular railway to the top of the mountain. The area has many temples and pagodas, but I was most interested in Oku-no-in which is the largest cemetery in Japan. There are more than 200,000 tombs in the cemetery, set...

NATIONAL PLACE OF SCENIC BEAUTY: FLAME OF PEACE / POND OF PEACE / CENOTAPH:
With the sun readying to set, I made my way to the National Place of Scenic Beauty directly across the road from the Children's Peace Monument.
I was first attracted to a row of tall, manicured trees - actually two rows - leading toward the Peace Memorial Museum. This wide corridor is in direct line-of-sight with the A-Bomb Dome ...
... I headed on my first night with Barney and an Aussie guy called Dan (who after telling him for many hours about the beautiful girls in Japan, he politely informed me he was gay... oops). In all the cities in Japan there is so many bars. Too many it seems. All the bars are hidden away. In Hiroshima, the night scene is generally in one area of streets and there is so many places on so many different floors its overwhelming. There is even a spot listed on the maps here that says “ ...
Hiroshima, Chugoku, Japan bharden... It also should be noted that it was my fault we got on the 'wrong' train in the first place. Tom just wrote down the directions incorrectly. In FACT it would take us about 4 hours to actually get to Kanazawa.
So, instead we opted for Kamakura, a tiny little tourist town with a large temple complex located in a valley. There also seemed to be a religious festival on at the time in which people threw white arrows in a a bonfire and prayed for prosperity.

Hiroshima, Japan berndendaphneIt was up early the next day as we were heading to Kyoto that night and wanted to fit some more sightseeing in before we went off to Kyoto. So, we planned to head to, what is considered, one of the most beautiful places in Japan. It definitely lived up to its name. We headed to Hiroshima station after checking out of the hotel. At the station we found a massive locker and shoved all our stuff in ...
Miyajima, Japan japanesewhisper... on a street. A lot of domestic and international tourists were strolling around the island. I was asked to take a photo of a couple from overseas in broken Japanese. However because I talked to them in English, they looked surprised to meet a English-speaking Japanese. Daishoin temple is another attraction in the island. You can find a lot of interesting statues like Anpanman, a Japanese anime hero, and spinning wheels of sutra.
... collected luggage, took Shinkansen to Kyoto, went to hotel. Went to shopping complex, met Ayano (23 yo) (student teacher from last year). Ate dinner (rice and beef). Went to Lawsons (nearby convenience store). Bought jam role, yoghurt and OJ for breakfast tomorrow. Ayano is staying at our hotel (she lives nearby (20 min by train)). Went to room, counted remaining money and went to sleep at about 11.30.
