Quelle surprise - the purse was in there and we left. The woman was not with us though... I suspect she may be spending a little time in ...

Pleasant Day in Durban

... in the group. I had only visited Durban once before, 17 years earlier in 1992, and I sure didn’t remember enjoying it so much as I did this time.

We enjoyed an excellent breakfast with an omelet made to order and a fresh waffle. I then went downstairs to the Cascades room to set up for class, glad that our 4th bag had been delivered to our room at 6 am with quizzes inside. I gave the first 2 quizzes for Geography 5, and most of the ...

Our last African hostel

... humid, after watching the surfing for a good while it became too hot, so we decided to go to one of the cinemas for the air conditioning. Madagascar 2 was the only film we recognised to my delight, not so Robbie. The cinema was incredible, it had the largest screen in the world filling the entire wall from ceiling to floor, the warning beforehand was to possible experience dizziness & those with epilepsy were advised to leave. Even though we bought nothing we ended up ...

... out of the ground, and they haven't run out just yet. When the gold mines had to close for lack of electricity they enjoyed a nice insurance policy - the gold price spiked to compensate for the worlds largest producer being on holiday. Back to Durban, which has no minerals at all, just good farmlands and a large port. The province, the kingdom of our famous Zulu's, has always been a bit behind the times - most of us are too busy enjoying the beaches to worry about much ...

Prior to moving to South Africa, Melanie was the program director for a very large AIDS prevention program in Harare, Zimbabwe, which was primarily funded by the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). She still works for UCSF on the same program part-time, doing administrative and accounting work. Shortly, she will also be working ...

Zulu learning in Durban

... 8211; and rightly so. I saw so many things and it was beautiful. The dive that I was doing was an underwater naturalist one, so that meant that I got to learn what all the different things that I saw were called, but trying to think of them all now is impossible! I saw flute fish, eels, loads of different rays, sand sharks, scorpions, angel fish, octopus, blue box jellyfish, turtles, starfish, crayfish, and loads of other things that I just can't recall ...

two ways of not knowing

... people on the train, there was a European queue of length zero. So Gandhi and I have this in common: we were both thrown off a train in South Africa for not knowing our place. In his case, it was of course a refusal to accept the rules, while in mine it was simple ignorance. Which is why there is a statue of Gandhi on the mall in Pietermaritzburg, but none of me in Mafeking.
