Chiang Mai

10th to 12th Aug 2007 This is my last night in Chiang Mai before heading of to the border with Laos to catch the slow boat to Luang Prabang. The past few days have been a little busy. On Friday, 10th I did a 1 day trekking tour, this involved trekking up and down steep jungle trails to arrive at the hill tribe families. Met up with 6 girls from Liverpool who were doing a 5 week break around SE Asia. After the jungle trek we headed of to ride with the elephants then we had lunch and bought the...

Freeze me, freeze me, til I loose control.

One sure thing on the Thai railways is that you won't feel too hot. Airco blows full blast the whole night long, meaning that sweltering temperatures outside are by no means felt in the carriages. This little fact I discovered when sleeping on the top bunk on the night train from Bangkok to Chiangmai last night. There really is a reason why you pay less for the top bunk in second class: you need to eat more to keep yourself warm (levelling the price between the two levels...)! Woke up in the...

22nd Nov 2005 Checked out of hotel and got collected at 8am to be taken to airport, arriving 2.5 hours early for our flight with One Two Go airlines so they booked us on to an earlier flight which arrived in Chiang Mai just under an hour after take off. We were then collected and taken to our hotel, The Winner Inn. Obviously, the picture in the leaflet had been taken many many years ago!! We were offered the opportunity of a visit to handicrafts and a meal with cultural show, but we turned bo...

Chiang Mai - Phuket

25th Nov 2005 (Contd) Eventually, we made it back to 'The Winner Inn' after a forty five minute drive back to Chiang Mai following the elephant "stroll". We put some laundry in, had a long hot shower, and slept for an hour as we had agreed to meet up with Cian, Siobhan and Maree for a "Pizza Hut" that night as we had all become sick of the fried rice. All in all, the Chiang Mai trek had been a disappointment. It had been recommended as a must do, but it didn't live up to expectations. I had h...

Sawadee-kha! (Hello in Thai). We are now in Chiang Mai, in the north of Thailand. We stayed at a hotel called Winner Inn and when we arrived the owner was very warm and welcoming, but a wily, crafty lady she was..she assured us that she 'take good care of us' and for us, but us only, we pay 100 baht and she put our luggage in locker instead of out like everyone else while we trek, but shhhh we no tell anybody..and she also sent us on a tour, for free, but shhhhh we no tell anybody! We did end...

Chiang Mai Again - A Mixed Bag

... samlaews, spew especially disgusting fumes. the farmers burn the dried crop residue to prepare for planting again, and the coal fired factories to the north in China emit smoke also. All of this smoke, pollution and haze settles in Chiang Mai. They say that the particulates in the air are doubly bad, because of burning trash which includes alot of burning plastic; bags and other things. The weather will not clear up here until the rains begin in April, at Songkran. I could ...

... wagered 100THB ($3) on every fight and after I was up big, we ended up even because of my greedy double-down-ness. There was even a roaming dude taking wagers and I, of course, got into a several-fight-long competition with him. At one point, I had taken away 400THB from the man (should have quit while I was ahead), but his desire to win back and my faux-confidence that I knew something about kickboxing allowed me to up the 100THB/fight wager and ...
