Buffalo Bill / Heart Mountain relocation camp

We began our stay in Cody last night with a fabulous meal and a rodeo. Lots of fun, leading to my growing appreciation of the western life. We saw talented young people who are great athletes, too, heard really bad but funny jokes, and generally got into the whole ambiance. I am, however, annoyed that they renamed the big dam the Shoshone River a few decades ago. Sensibly, it was called the Shoshone Dam. It was renamed to the Buffalo Bill Cody Dam. Kind of like renaming National Airport. Blah...

Big Horn Canyon Nat'l Rec Area / wild mustangs

Wyoming, like Montana, could be called Big Sky Country. One can see for miles and miles, and the sky has varied today from brilliant blue to dark, fast moving clouds. Tonight, after a long day of touring (www.southmountainexpeditions.com) , Ron and I were running back to the hotel through a windy rain shower and were stunned to look up and see a full semi-circle of a rainbow, with all its colors bright - almost iridescent. The bases of the rainbow must have been several miles apart, with no b...

Guess What? - Old Faithful Gushed on Schedule

Back to Yellowstone NP to see Old Faithful. Stopped to look at an elk cow in the road that came within a few feet. Then saw group of Bison engaged in "rutting". They were just across the road from us and we could feel the power as they fought. Hiked up to see some "paint/mud ...

Everything we need in one spot!

Stop to check out a covered bridge, but it was recent construction, kind of lame.

Decided to look for food, in the mood for oriental. First we find gas for $2.39 a gallon! The find te buffent and end up receiving WIFI in the parking lot! Then the buffet has CRABLEGS.

Needless to say, we a both full for the evening (6:30pm local time). We're still around 110+ miles from Devils Tower, maybe tent, maybe not?

Just the Facts, Ma'am

No photos tonight.  We've landed in Sheridan, Wyoming (not far from the Montana state line) and it's raining and cold.  Beautiful country with the Big Horn mountains appearing to our west about an hour before we stopped for the night, and tomorrow we head into those mountains on our way to the Big Horn Medicine Wheel and then on to Cody.

This morning we couldn't get Happy Camper out of "park" (I guess she wanted to stay in the Black Hills a while longer).  But we called our ...

The rest of Wyoming

... about 2,000 people to camp in Dayton (recommendation by a grocery clerk in Sheridan) at a small private campground just over the Tounge River. Well, I was a little scared when we pulled into the parking lot, if you could call it that. All of those old B rated horror movies came to my mind. The night was uneventful however and we moved out early the next morning. We traveled from Dayton to Cody, Wyoming which is the ...

Sunday 20 July

... out through this route and it is a long drive up through mountains until you get to Cody and then Y.Stone. Fuel was ridiculously expensive in Buffalo - about 50 cents a gallon more than we had seen in Gillette! We were mad with ourselves, especially as we needed food too. We haven't made too many errors like this one so far. So we decided to continue heading north to Sheridan, where we could shop at Walmart and buy fuel at a half-way decent price. Then we headed ...

Stalking a Moose

... continued to back up. After a couple more snorts and shakes of its head she walked off. I was really glad she didn't trample me death.
On the way back arond the lake, I had gone about a half mile chasing the moose, I spied another wild animal but this one didn't seem so threatening-a beaver and its hut. Back to finish the painting and then I heated ...

Wyoming Will be My New Home-For Now

When I got up the next morning I was walking along the creek and I saw where somebody had left 13 beers in it to keep it cool. It definitely wasn't my favorite but at least it wasn't diet beer and it would be fine on a hot dry day when I have been hiking.
I headed back into civilization, which out west could be several buildings sitting together. This was Moorcroft where I had breakfast at the Hub Cafe-eggs ...
