Grand Teton National Park / Wyoming

Where am I?

... in Wyoming looked good. The van was making a loud knocking noise on the rough roads so I checked underneath and found a loose rear shock. So we are stuck here until it is fixed drinking wine and watching HBO. Stay tuned. Nels

.

... a hurry to get into the Fort, I tried to scale the wall. Please look at the photo to see what a pain in the rear it is to scale the wall. Yesterday I spotted a Tesla on the road. It is the first one I ever saw. It is the first all-electric car available in America and costs about $100,000. Rock Springs is a real ...

... s a good thing that it's population is sparse, since the mining takes up a lot of space and is not particularly beautiful either. It's good to be back in the west, and I'm struck by how much more this area feels like the west than further west does. I know that I live about as far west as one can get in the continental US, but Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, and Nevada feel more like 'the west' than the west coast does. I guess it's because I live in 'ecotopia' not the 'wild west'.

... back home then. Along with lots of cows out in pastures, I saw a couple of groups of prong horn antelopes grazing along the fences by the highway. They are so graceful and lovely. As I got past the Snowy Range, the wind really picked up a lot and there are snow fences to help keep the highway open. I saw cows lying or grazing in the lee of the snow fences where they were more comfortable because the wind was mitigated. I also saw open pit mining operations as I drove ...

... you follow this road. I took a photo at a rest stop just to show the snow and wind - note the flags. When I arrived in Rock Springs I drove out to the Wild Horse Rescue ranch and looked at the horses. I was going to adopt one for Carol, but it was too late and the office was closed. I have some better photos of the horses, but will not be able to load them till I get home.

Touring Teton

This day we toured Grand Teton National Park. The scenery was even better than Yellowstone although the haze in front of the mountains never really cleared. Had another leisurely picnic by a river and talked to one of the tour guides for the river float that was taking out of the place we were resting. He reported that a grissly bear was in the area and we ...

... in the water basins look incredible in the fields of Utah! They make impression of a snow somewhere in the middle of summer... We have not have any steak yet (Ian!), but have seen many potential steaks walking on the fields... still on the list... It's funny how you can find casinos in Nevada in ...

Day Two: A Few Road Trip Lessons

... not stare. In all seriousness, Wyoming has been the most beautiful drive. Eastern Oregon, Idaho, and most of Utah were pretty boring. But the end of Utah and all of Wyoming thus far has been breath-taking. (7) Love your vehicle--Rachel decided that her Dodge Neon needed a name. After vetoing my suggestions (Zelda, Bitsy, Gretchen), she decided on Gloria. Quite a nice choice, actually. She even has her own song. In any ...
