An understanding of the ages through history and the gods of the Pharonic period in Egypt might help some of you appreciate the various sites we are visiting during our time in Egypt, so I thought I'd include a very brief summary for those of you who may be interested. If it all seems too academic for you, then feel free to skip it!! 5 periods in the history of Egypt (1) The Pharonic Age (5000 BC - 332BC) (2) The Ptolamaic Age (331BC - 30BC) (3) The Graeco-Roman Age (4) The Christian Age (5) ...
Alexandria, Egypt fifootaOur first full day in Egypt was spent visiting the Pyramids, a wonderful way to kick off the trip. There were many pyramids built in Egypt, however many are in ruins. The 3 pyramids at Giza (including the Great Pyramid) are probably the most famous, while the Step Pyramid at Saqqarah was the first of the pyramids. These impressive structures were built during the Old Kingdom, more than 4,500 years ago. Our first stop was the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Approaching these magnificent struc...

... militant attacks.

We are taken to our hotel, the Egypt Hotel (how original) which is a different hotel than what was printed on our initial invoice. You can’t judge a book by its cover. This hotel starts on the third floor of a building that is 109 years old. The outside looks decrepit, but the hotel portion is quite nice. The elevator up to the third floor is vintage early 1900. Our room is a two-bedroom suite (one room with a queen bed and ...

Alexandria, Al Iskandariyah, Egypt emaratna8... the Mediterranean). We decided to go all-out and pack as much into the day as possible. And pack it in we did. We started with a little breakfast (I couldn't take part as it was the last day of Ramadan) and then walked down to the famous Alexandria Library. After the library, we went over to the Egyptian Museum of Alexandria, which was cool but had nothing too terribly special, and then on to the beach.
<br ...
Alexandria, Egypt richfrohl... the whole area which includes a banquet hall for the wake was discovered! Again there is a blend of ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman designs. Then it was on to Amud El Sawaris- the complex known as Pompey's pillar. Nothing to do with Pompey in Italy, the pillar was erected to recognise the establishment of Alexandria by Alexander the Great and in memory of Diocletian. It is flanked by 2 sphinx and is part of the excavated complex of a temple and library that was ...
Alexandria, Egypt kingstravel... watching the old men play backgammon. Fashion also seems to be a priority in Alexandria, though Dave and I are still baffled at how the locals can manage to look so well dressed and clean when every window has a line of washing hanging from it, blowing dry amidst the pollution and dirt- as evidenced by the brownish colour of the once white french style apartments and hotels. The men are usually dressed in stylish clothes that we ...
Alexandria, Egypt dave_carol... to put my toe in the Med Sea as we were not able to go down to a sandy beach, but we did walk along a seawall. Very picturesque. The highway area was partially desert and partially agricultural as it follows the Nile north to the delta at Alexandria. Speed limit on this highway (sort of a freeway) 56 mph. More insane driving. NOBODY follows the lanes. We passed the Smart Village which is newly constructed office and manuf buildings for the high tech ...
Alexandria, Egypt jbdsalem... wish you all a Very Happy New Year, I want it for you to be based on positive thinking only and on good experiences. I hope it will bring you wonderful surprises and amazing moments! I`m sending my love from the Mediterranean Sea, somewhere in between Egypt (where I was yesterday) and Sicily (where I`ll be in 2 days). Mwah! Bogna
Alexandria, Egypt bogna... air since arriving in Alexandria. We rented a great little flat. The luxury of daily baths, our own kitchen and no constant negotiation to find nightly accommodation has been splendid. Our first impressions of Alexandria were that we had perhaps made a mistake in our choice of home for 2 months. After 7 months in Africa, Alex appeared too 'European', and far too familiar. We even considered returning to Khartoum in Sudan to do our Arabic studies. But it has been a great city ...
