An understanding of the ages through history and the gods of the Pharonic period in Egypt might help some of you appreciate the various sites we are visiting during our time in Egypt, so I thought I'd include a very brief summary for those of you who may be interested. If it all seems too academic for you, then feel free to skip it!! 5 periods in the history of Egypt (1) The Pharonic Age (5000 BC - 332BC) (2) The Ptolamaic Age (331BC - 30BC) (3) The Graeco-Roman Age (4) The Christian Age (5) ...
Alexandria, Egypt fifootaOur first full day in Egypt was spent visiting the Pyramids, a wonderful way to kick off the trip. There were many pyramids built in Egypt, however many are in ruins. The 3 pyramids at Giza (including the Great Pyramid) are probably the most famous, while the Step Pyramid at Saqqarah was the first of the pyramids. These impressive structures were built during the Old Kingdom, more than 4,500 years ago. Our first stop was the pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Approaching these magnificent struc...

... react. Matt had already had some stomach issues the night before and I was out of immodium. The next stop before the car was the pharmacy to get something. That done, I took my 2 and Matt took 1 as a precaution and back to Cairo we went. It's now about 9:10pm and we just got back to the hotel. Tonight it's packing up and getting ready to head back to Amman and the next part the trip. Time to go and get the bill ready!
Alexandria, Egypt kcrooneThe second largest city in Egypt, Alexandria, known as "The Pearl of the Mediterranean", has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern ; its ambience and cultural heritage distance it from the rest of the country although it is actually only 225 km. from Cairo. Founded by Alexander ...
Alexandria, Egypt emilly... to the cats lounging around sites. Next stop is the Alexandria museum. Once a private residence and a US consulate before finally becoming the museum. It's small but has very nice displays- first floor is focused on Graeco-Roman Alexandria. The lower floor is filled with more "conventional" artifacts from the Cairo Egyptian museum. They keep this place freezing! Next up is the Kom El Shogafa catacombs from the ...
Alexandria, Egypt wwatling... will know that you are not too smart. No one should offer that kind of information to strangers. To one of them I snapped and asked why he wanted to know my business while I told the other guy to get lost. Becoming an ass has become more and more easy the longer I stay in Egypt. Istill get surprised each time these wanna be scammers back off after being direct with them. I think when they know that you are not a naive ...
Alexandria, Egypt jfontanieu... something to do with me developing a sickness unto death. But I'd prefer to think its the atmosphere of Alex, the WASP of the Mediterranean - lazy, tidy, fun-loving and pretentious. One of the first things Laura (my Alex traveling companion) noticed when we got to Alex was the big no-honking sign right outside the east train station. What suprised me is that it actually seemed to mean ...
