A seriously messed up journey, but we made it to the beaches of Mui Ne. After waking up 15min before our bus was supposed to leave, rushing around in a hangover fog to pack our stuff up, we ended up waiting around for the 40min late bus. THEN the bus drove right through Mui Ne without telling us we were there ( like we're supposed to just *know* what it looks like!??) and would've continued all the way to freakin' Saigon if I hadn't checked the map and realized we passed it already. Without a...
Mui Ne, Vietnam oandmBesides kitesurfing (of which there is plenty, and fun to watch.. lessons cost $240/5hrs so we passed) Mui Ne is famous for it's stretch of red and white sand dunes. Instead of booking a tour we decided to rent a bike and drive the 25km to see the white dunes on our own. We arrived early evening, which seemed to be the perfect time. Only a handful of other tourists and the dunes were just starting to cool down. A couple of pushy kids were trying to act as guides for us, offering plastic sleds...
Mui Ne, Vietnam oandm... dying people around us) so we weren't too worried about this 'tourist' bus. This time though it wasn't our fellow passengers that were the problem but the tiny rock hard beds. Unlike the Chinese bus where Tom and I had two beds together where we could stretch across each other, this time we were in single file cot width metal boxes which had a fixed head rest somewhere between sitting up and lying down. 'At least there's no crazy, screeching Chinese music ...
Mui Ne, Vietnam amyandtom... when put on windy roads for any length of time has long disappeared. There are definitely a few incidents when I went hill walking with school that are forever etched in my memory and Gisele’s for that matter. Combinations of windy roads, small buses and breakfasts of porridge bring back rather unpleasant memories. Luckily though those days are long gone and so didn’t struggle with the pass as poor Miriam did.
The views down over the sea were stunning and we stopped for ...

Mmmmm god it was good!

On the way home, we came across this sign we couldn't resist pulling over and getting it for the album!

Leaving Mui Ne we got our first 'sleeper bus' experience. Best way to travel ever!

Mui Ne, Vietnam danandkate... the other end of the resort). Oh, and we also enjoyed the wonderful seafood!

We did spend one day sightseeing (ie we managed to drag ourselves away from the beach); we explored a nearby town, Phan Thiem, which was a nice contrast to Mui Ne. The port was really pretty.

We then decided to go further afield and visit Ta Ca mountain (there's a big reclining budda there). We drove the hour ...
Mui Ne, Vietnam annandrewabroad... DMZ and was the site of a major US base. Today it looks just like the other villages we have passed. As we traveled on Highway 9, which was paved by the US to transport ammo and supplies to American bases throughout the DMZ, it was hard to imagine that a war was fought here. According to the guidebooks and old pictures of Highway 9 the US cleared the area of vegetation so that it would be easier to see movement ...
Dong Ha, Quảng Trị, Vietnam carlaandmikeDrew's awesome German managed to bag us a lift to the Vinh Moc tunnels, half way between Dong Hoi and Dong Ha. We were up at 5am (yes, 5am!!!) and not exactly raring to go! We arrived at the Vinh Moc tunnels ridiculously early but it meant we had the whole place to ourselves... Including the fact that the tour guides didn't arrive until half an hour later. We were assured that we could do the tunnels on our own though so off we went...

The ...
Dong Ha, Quảng Trị, Vietnam annandrewabroad... all made sure we had a fun time, took our pictures and even video (I can't even figure out that function on my camera!). We tip them 200,000vnd (Approx $12.00USD) to split amongst all six of them.
We said our goodbyes to the Red Sand Dune Children and rode over to the fishing village on the beach. We were the only tourist in the village. It was fascinating to watch the dynamics of the little village and how they worked together. First ...
