A relaxing, beautiful place to start

Everyone has been extremely accomodating & helpful to us here. Both pools are great, the swim up bar was pretty fun, but the coctails were steep compared to some out of the way spots we found while cruising the streets. The variety at the continental breakfast is super fantastic. We feel extremely safe and comfortable staying here. Not a bad spot to have as a home base while here. The only 2 things to think about are: If you want inexpensive drinks, don't get them at your hotel, head out into the streets and find yourself some deals... the other thing, go online and prebook if you want to get a deal for this hotel, we got a great room on www.asiarooms.com

... security including metal detectors and pat downs.

My plan was to leave Kuta by bus ferry and train to begin my travel across the large island of Java, but as it turns out the train from Banyuwangi (I love to say that out loud) to Surabaya was totally booked (Chinese New Year?) so I had to get a last minute flight - only $34. Not bad. Hopefully I coud get a train from Surabaya to Yogykarta when I get there.
Maybe 5 days is a bit ...

Bali baby: Day 7 - Turtles and dirty old Kuta

... I stumbled on this other place called the Turtle Conservation and Education Centre in Serangan online. This was an amazing choice. It is supported by WWF which made me feel better, and was only a donation to see. It is off the main road, and doesn't have that 'street appeal', but it was so worth it. A volunteer showed us around and told us about how the turtles got there. God humans are a-holes. The turtles wind up there from ingesting plastic, getting caught in nets, or by ...

... about 800 people living there. He told us all about the village life, the history and the rituals and traditions. Cockfighting seems to be very popular in Bali and is one of their main events, one cock has to die and will then be eaten for dinner. The village has a pink cock, which was dyed as a joke... Poor thing :( we also saw the batik and silk/cotton materials that had been made in the village and basket bags and boxes, some really lovely ...

... 2 weeks. They showed us how to make 7 different local dishes including a peanut satay sauce, mie goreng, yellow curry, gadu gadu and ? Balls (sweet rice balls filled with palm sugar, rolled in shredded coconut. The best part was we got to eat it all at the end! We thoroughly enjoyed the class and plan on trying some of the recipes when we get home. On our last night we took a walk over to the other side of the island to ...

The Last Beach Horrah!

Our original plan was to go to the Gili Islands (because that's the place to be these days), then climb Mt. Rinjani on Lombok Island after our scuba adventure in Tulamben. Unfortunately the waves made it impossible to take a boat there for at least another week. So we opted on the next best thing: go to another island and scuba dive some more! Which lucky island received us? Lembongan! A magnificent, rather undeveloped island with more of that ...
