... what this place was all about between times.
The bus drops you off at the front door of Graceland and each busload, or about 25 people, are allowed into the home in groups. You tour the main floor rooms first. Photos are allowed both inside and outside, but no flash is allowed. They said if you use a flash the ghost of Elvis will haunt you.
The original house has been modified and enlarged during the time Elvis lived there. The house ...
... he was as a human being.
In the afternoon we drove to downtown Memphis, and particularly Beale Street, the home of Memphis Blues, and arguably the birthplace of rock and roll. Only one block of it maintains its historic character with well worn clubs and bars, and historic shops such as Schwabs department store complete with soda counter and milkshake machines.
Not much was happening in the early afternoon, so we set off on foot on ...
... good for both of them because Elvis then went on to become the most successful recording artist of the time and Sam Phillips and Sun Studios lived on to fight another day (he recorded Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and also Carl Perkins). When we leave there we manage to get a shuttle bus down to Beale St which saves us a lot of mucking around.
A few things about the south; it's hot, damn hot! New Orleans was hot and wet, Clarksdale was hot and here, it's just hot. It's ...
... singing two songs, "My Happiness" and "That's When Your Heartaches Begin." It cost Elvis a day's wages, $3.25. Later, when Marion played Sam the recording he wasn't impressed. It wasn't until July 1954, a year later, that Sam was looking for a singer for his two instrumentalists, guitarist Scotty Moore, and bassist, Bill Black, that Marion reminded Sam of "that kid" who keeps bugging her. Sam was open minded enough to give it a shot and the rest is history. It is a history ...
... played, it was a good dinner.
After dinner we went for a walk to Beale street and then
back to the same bar that we went to last night. The bar was much
less crowded, but there was live music and good beer at good prices,
so i had a few drinks, listened to the music and talked to people.
When that bar closed we went to BB kings, where there was more live
music and a few more drinks. I stayed for a bit then walked back to
the hotel and went to bed.
