We woke up in the fog in Passau. Actually, in more ways than one as we had to use the alarm to get us up at 7 am. At 8:30 we took a walking tour of the city. We started in the fog but it gradually burned off and it turned into beautiful sunny day. We attribute this to bringing our heavy raincoats and deciding not to bring sunscreen. Passau was governed by prince-bishops until 1806, so we saw the bishop's ...

... a short walk to the main square which features the Holy Trinity statue built to remember the people who died in the plague epidemics. Laurie had done some research about things to do and we elected to take the mountain tram up the nearby hill of Postlingberg. This hill is 539 metres high and has a great view over the city. So without our food restocked we started around the other side of the lake and started to climb towards the ...

... church). The city had some good ones, and others who people disliked, which led to a number of uprisings. You can still see the covered passageway that led down from the castle to the river, where a boat was waiting to spirit the leader away to safety, in case of a revolt that got out of hand. This passageway has the narrow slits in the walls for archers to shoot at attackers, as well as ramparts from which ...

... It was really run to bike ahead of our ship, then stop to wave to our parents as they passed and take photos. The ride really gave us a great perspective of the small towns along the river, and the beautiful scenery which surrounds them. It was a great experience, and especially fun to ride into the city of Passau, crossing the river, and then along the large dam/hydroelectric plant that spans the river along the western side of the city. ...
