      We spent the night at a hotel in Wichita that had a "Stay & Fly" package. Room and parking for less than parking alone! Now waiting for the plane to Denver for the first leg of our trip to Hilo (Wichita-Denver-LA-Hilo)

      ... It wasn't as good as home, but it was exactly what I needed! Perfect road trip food! A few more hours on the road, and we made it into Wichita, Kansas. When we left Houston, it's was sunny and 95 degrees. In Wichita, it's night and 59 degrees. Looks like I'm going to bust out the jeans tomorrow! We will have about six more hours to Denver before we meet up with another high school classmate for a weekend of Broncos ...

      ... south on US 77, stopping in Junction City, Kansas for fuel. We paid $3.27/gal and got over 10 mpg on that tank. From there, we hopped on I-70 W toward Abilene, Kansas to tour the Eisenhower Library and Museum. As we drove, I saw a sign that said we were also following the Chisholm Trail. I think five different trails converge in this area: Santa Fe, Oregon, Chisholm, Pony Express and California I believe.

      ... says it got its name from Wichita being the Air Capital of the World. Really??

      We spent some "quality time" this evening at a Dillon food store - a chain which is owned by Kroger. Other than that, we didn't do a whole lot, as it was late afternoon before we arrived and got set up. All in all, not much to report!

      ... we have seen after the Atomic Bombs fell near the end of WWII. Today, it is still obvious that something terrible has happened. There are houses that are being built but there are very few trees (the big ones that we saw three years ago had had all of their leaves and bark stripped off leaving a ghostly outline of what used to be there) and no other vegetation and only scattered residences.
