Idyllic Beauty on Lake Como
We left early again so eager as we were to get to Lake Como for our first time. After a harrowing drive around the lake, we arrived in the town of Varenna on the eastern shore, recommended by Rick Steves and in retrospect a great choice. There are many towns around the lake with hotels like Bellagio, Menaggio, and the town of Como, but Varenna is …
Heaven on the Lake
Hi Everyone,
Yesterday Alan and I left Venice, rented a car and drove to a 13th century castle in the Dolomite mountains. We slept in a room that was 800 years old, although the furniture were reproductions. What wasn't a fake was the extroidinary view of the mountains and the town of Pergine as we were 1000 feet up. It was an amazing …
Luca and Mary and Laura and Alan
Hi Everyone:
We just returned from an amazing day with Luca and Mary, our friends who live in Figline Valdarno (20 mins south of Florence), who drove for 7 hrs (actually they were stuck in lots of traffic along the way) to visit us in Varenna. We had lunch lakeside, and then took a ferry to Bellagio, strolled around the Gardens of Villa …
Return to Paradise
Sorry I missed yesterday's blog, but I temporarily ran out of gas. Nonetheless, we did spend the day in Venice taking the motorboat ride to Murano, where we successfully obtained the top of a wine decanter which had broken during one of our dinners back in Woodstock. We strolled the town and then took the boat to Burano where we had lunch at a very …
Our last full day in Italy
We spent the day in the typical Lago di Como fashion of ferrying around the lake. We returned to Bellagio, most active and scenic of the towns around the lake. Lunch at a very good place at which we had eaten before, Trattoria Il Giacomo. It was the best salad and best spaghetti ragu of the trip pretty much everyone agreed. Then some shopping …

What a stroke of luck. When we arrived at Villa Cipressi we were very tired from hiking on the other side of the lake in the mountains near Breglia (about 25 minutes from Menaggio). We had missed our bus, just caught a ferry and it was raining as we approached Varenna...a tough day.
When we got to the reception desk we were told there was a problem with our room but that they would take care of us. We later learned a guest decided to stay an extra day and our room was made unavailable. The did take care of us and then some. On the property in their large and beautiful garden there is one freestanding cottage called Suite Villa Magnolia (http://www.hotelvillacipressi.it/english/suite_villa_magnolia.html). It is a magnificent, large, high ceiling one room building directly on the shore of Lake Como. It has a large bathroom with a walk-in shower.
As I said, we really got lucky.
The staff at Villa Cipressi were great and very helpful throughout our two night stay.
Our only disappointment was that breakfast was just OK and showed little creativity. Also, the breakfast staff was somewhat inattentive (dirty plates allowed to stay on tables for too long and buffet food trays not refilled promptly).
Overall...a wonderful experience.

Historical Traveler Reviews Hotel Villa Cipressi Varenna
Bellisimo!
What a wonderful place! Our room looked out over Lake Como (well worth the extra cost) and it was huge! Our room had 2 twin beds, a couch, 2 easy chairs, a dining table w/4 chairs, good-sized bathroom, a large TV and the most amazing view. The staff was friendly and spoke English, the included continental breakfast was good and the view from the breakfast room was a lovely way to start your morning. There is a little deli about 1/2 blk away, wine, cheese, salami and other local foods. Yummy! The ferry systems connects you easily to all parts of the lake. Bellagio is touristy, but fun. We visted the Villa Carlotta and the gardens and villa are very lovely. It's hard to imagine that people actually lived there. The only downside was we were only there for 2 nights. We'll be back!
Beautiful view, great hotel
Had a great room with tremendous view of the lake. Stayed at a variety of hotels in Germany, Switzerland and Italy, and this was one of our favorites.
Clean, decent bathroom, nice high ceilings, friendly/helpful staff, nice art in the common areas.
Garden area wasn't quite as nice as expected, and nearby construction put somewhat of a damper on the ambience. Typical Italian breakfast. Vegetarians should look elsewhere for dinner.
Internet access was offered via hotel's own office computer, leading to privacy/security concerns, but was not unusual for Europe...
The most charming and friendly of our trip to Italy
Four days at the Villa Cipressi on Lake Como were the best in Italy. Friendly and patient staff, fabulous views and surroundings. A sanctuary on an international trip.
My favorite place and hotel out of our whole trip to Italy!!
Gorgeous! Beautiful! You will not be disappointed if you stay here (especially if your spring for the much quiter view room). My only regret? That we only stayed for one night! The room was amazing, clean, and cool. The service was friendly, and fast. The location could not have been better. On the night that we stayed it was "a very special night" and they lit little tea candles all over the public areas, and had a very reasonable fish dinner on their patio w/ a view of the lake while you dined-absolutely breathtaking!!
Beautiful, friendly, romantic Villa Cipressi
What a great hotel. Our large quiet room had one of the most amazing views over Lake Como and the neighbouring Villa Monestaro. This was ideal for a truely romantic experience - just the way a vacation in Italy should be. There are numerous restaurants close by or take a ferry across the lake for more great dining. Breakfast is included, and this can be taken out on the garden terrace - with more views of the lake.
I would like to add that the staff are friendly and helpful - their English is excellent (far better than my Italian unfortunately).
When you think of a villa in italy this is the place to go
My family and I stayed at the villa for the end of our vacation in Italy. The suite we were in was the most amazing room! The floor to ceiling doors were kept open for the cooling breezes from the lakes. The whole place was relaxing and quiet. I looked forward to going to bed at night to wake up to the sunrise off the lake in the morning. In addition to mornings, the breakfast at the villa was the best in Italy. The gardens surrounding the villa were beautiful too. All I wanted to do was lounge in the gardens and relax. If you are going to stay at the villa go all out and get the best room in the place. It is definately worth it. This isn't the place for people that want to see a lot of action. The city is one of the more serene places compared to Bellagio or Menagio, you can visit these though by taking the ferry, so you will not miss out.
I loved the Villa Cipressi and it's location on Lake Como
The Villa Cipressi in Varenna on Lake Como was the perfect location to spend the last three days of our Italian idyll. Upon arrival in our room, I opened the shutters to an absolutely breathtaking view of the gardens, lake and distant mountains. The room was very adequate. The staff at the hotel were very pleasant and helpful. Villa Cipressi and Varenna enjoy a splendid location on Lake Como. There is easy access to the ferry docks for visits to Mennagio and Bellagio across the lake. From Mennagio one can take a bus across the mountains to Lugano as well. This is a beautiful part of the world!
Gorgeous Surroundings
Affordable and comfortable, the rooms weren't massive, but if you have any sense, you won't be in them too much during your waking hours. The gardens here are amazing, it is well worth a visit, just for the gardens. Relaxing and friendly atmosphere, breakfast had plenty of choice, not just cheese and ham which many of the hotels in italy provide you with (not that I'm complaining, it's just nice to have a bit of variation!). I would recommend anyone coming to this area to stay here for at least one night.
Beautiful Hotel but a little on the Noisy Side
We recently stayed the night at the Hotel Cipressi and found it to be a beautiful hotel but quite noisy. The size of the room was nice and it had a small window which overlooked the lake but the noise from the traffic outside was horrible! Our room was on the corner of the hotel closest to the street and if it wasn't the sound of loud scooters racing by it was the church bells right outside our window. My friend stayed in this same hotel and did not have any problems because their room was closest to the Villa Monastero and overlooking the lake. The breakfast buffet was quite nice and the staff was very accomadating as well. I would stay here again in the future but I would make sure that my room is not on the corner! Don't stay in Room 212!
Wonderful views - but does anything work?
Villa Cipressi is a beautiful building with superb views over Lake Como, set in lovely terraced gardens on the steep hillside. It's only a couple of minutes to the main piazza and the footpath along the lake front to the ferries. So, full marks for the setting. Our room was lovely, modern and well furnished, very reasonably priced at 200 Euros to sleep 4, with a king size bed on the mezzanine floor, 2 single beds, sitting area and bathroom down below.
But the place is by no means perfect. Problems - Italy's hottest summer and the air conditioning not working, no fans could be provided and up in the roof it was hard to breathe. Then when we thought we'd go for a swim in the lake, access was impossible for anyone not an athlete. And the whole place seemed horribly understaffed - the restaurant and bar were closed, the receptionist having to fetch drinks as well as doing everything else. So - lovely spot, but don't expect 3 star service.
