... sites in Greece. It's main town of Thira is perched 1,000 feet above the sea level on the lip of the crater and other villages and towns are sprinkled along the spine of the island like crystals of salt. We checked into the resort and wandered up town to look at the view of the caldera. It was one of the most scenic views that we have seen. Bars hang along the edge of the cliff with a bird's eye view of ships like toys in a bathtub 1,000 feet below. Simos took us to what is ...

... creating the blue waters that make the area famous. The depth of the caldera is approximately 400 meters, which meant there are few places where large ships can anchor Our ship was lucky enough to get the only spot where there is a suitable anchorage (this was on top of a pinnacle that sits in around 40m). The other cruise ships in area were forced to spend the day bobbing around, using their thrusters to keep in position. This also means that it is one of our ...

Luckily our very handsome greeter (so Erin says) took us to a cab where we drove up the cliff to our hotel. We did not expect the taxi driver to stop at the edge of the cliff and point straight down to the ocean, saying "hotel." We began to carry our bags down a dizzying set of stairs before the hotel ...

... of Santorini and the surrounding islands! Then we drove to Thira (Fira). We found somewhere to park the car and walked through the town and then hiked out onto a rocky peninsular. We found a little church out on the far side of the rock and were there for a beautiful sunset. We then hiked back to Fira and our car and found a little restaurant were we had delicious pasta for dinner before heading ...

      Possibly NOT the Smartest Choice

... piggly way. We are told it takes 1/2 hour to get to the top and 20 minutes to return and we are moored for 1 1/2 hours. I can do this even though my legs are still rather wobbly from walking down the donkey path. This is like walking up the sand dunes in Namibia! Each time you got to the top of a hill, there would be be a taller and bigger hill behind it. My husband thought that he'd just get to the first crater and that would be it but ...
