Great trip down Route 93 to Ely. Passed the "Loneliest Road in America", Route 50, but this has got to be a competitor. Except for spectacular geography, not much along this route, unless you have an ATV that can take you up the dirt roads into the foothills where there seems to be a lot of mines, most of them abandoned.

Ely is another 'left over" town, from the boon days of mining. All these towns have a dog-eared look to ...

With The Loneliest Highway in America now behind me, I took a much needed day off in Ely, Nevada. It is what they call out here, a 'Big Town'. There are 2 main streets, a few small casinos and a bunch of run down motels that wouldn't cut it elsewhere. I stayed in one of them and I honestly feel that my already weather worn tent is much cleaner. I felt the need to sleep on top of the comforter with all the lights on and the tv going to ...

How ironic is it that my 1st overnight stop is similar to my brother's name Eli?! Except for Ely is pronounced as Eee-lee. I think mom must have planned that one. We finally arrived to this quaint town after 8 hours of driving. We checked into the Hotel Nevada. When it opened in 1929, it was the tallest building in the state. This place is bursting at the seams with character ...

... It also has some called shields which are very rare. Walking through it was a wonderland. One of the larger rooms was used as a speakeasy in the 1920s. How about American ingenuity! The high is Wheeler Peak, a little over 13,000 ft.. Another scary, winding road takes you from 7,000 to 11,000 ft. with great basin and mt. views. At the end you take a long hike farther up to a stand of bristlecone pines, the ...

... us in the small town of Cherry Creek. Then Lisa and I drove to Ely, gassed up and got supplies for the next leg of our trip. We drove thru some of my most favorite parts of Hiway 50. We got rained on thru the passes. When we arrived in Eureka we went to the fairgrounds and hosed the trailer down, preparing it for BLM LAND! BLM requested that we clean (pressure wash) our rigs after we leave BLM land and enter into another sector.
