Karst Beauty, a Few Characters, and Slow Tumble

The karst hills of Yangshuo surrounding the Li and Yulong Rivers seem like features of another planet. We got in a hike here along the Yulong River. Because it was the May Day weekend, for the first half of the day we were surrounded by hordes of Chinese tourists. (Imagine how a couple of German tourists to Ontario would feel visiting Niagara Falls on Victoria Day.) For the second half, however, as we got further off the beaten track we were alone with the local villagers, following the river...

Cherry arrives and our trip begins

Cherry's flight arrived in Guilin on time, and I had taken a taxi from Yangshuo to meet her. Our plan was to spend the first few days of her three weeks holiday in Yangshuo, before traveling back to Jianghua for a few days to be spent at my school, but the weather/power/traveling conditions were such that I had already decided that going back there would be a mistake, and may mean that we would not be able to get out again. We had a nice few days in Yangshuo. Although the weather was an impro...

Can't get enough of that bamboo rafting.

... at the 49 Juice Bar - then travels for three months and goes back home for three months... He was really helpful in advising us of where to look and what teaching English is like.

We eventually found a place at the ORAL English College which has table tennis tables right outside and two teachers from England, one from Texas and another from Argentina so it seemed like a great place to be. We had a hole in the floor for a toilet, but it's something that one gets used to ...

Floating Down the Li

... walk through a field, bamboo pole over his shoulder with a heavy water barrel hanging from each end, and tubes jutting from the bottom of them, which he was using to water the greenery. The load must have been phenomenally heavy, I reflected, and his upper body strength, as well as his balance, terrific. Just as I was musing that little must have changed in these fields over the centuries ...

WEEK TWO

... gals from the Juice bar Tina and Sarah were back from the exams with a combination of happy and said faces. As I thought the oral exam was a breeze but all the books they bought and read did not prepare them at all for the written exam. Open discussion was a little crazy tonight. It started out at 7:00 with only a couple of people but by the time I ended it we had almost 25 people crammed into the Juice Bar. This is a little too many for causal discussion ...

Take Me to the Moon

... Wallowing water buffalo bobbed their heads in the many tributaries that flowed through the carefully irrigated fields. Elderly farmers were out in the paddies tending their crop, and the young men floated tourists down the river on bamboo rafts. We enjoyed our ride in the countryside with Canney, but the life was tough for these village people, and their hardships lingered in my mind. It was an uncanny feeling that I can’t quite describe ...

Views from my walks

... would work out. That is the nice thing about a digital camera. It doesn't cost to take the picture. So I can delete the bad ones. Here are few. I will keep doing this to get some more pictures coming your way. I hope they don't get too redundant for you. (Is too redundant a redundant statement?) Deja vu. Enjoy.

Had a Hard Day, Such a Hard Day!

... Are you kidding me right now?! The day has been a complete rain out! After our showers Bill put Bactine on all of my cuts. I think I have some tiny pieces of thorns in a few spots, but I am unable to dig them out with a pin. We had dinner again at our hotel. We ordered the local specialty - beer fish. We chose the cheaper, carp with bones instead of boneless catfish and steamed rice. I ordered Louhanzai a famous vegetarian monk dish with bean curd, glass noodles, elephant ear ...

... the local government. She became the oldest guide in Yangshuo. Despite her age and the fact that she is completely illiterate she still gives excellent guided tours of the area. One only has to look in her notebooks to discover all the wonderful comments that people have about her. It is an interesting story about how she got her name. When she first was unofficially giving tours a ...
