... where I had an excursion lined up. The caves are famous for the bioluminence created by "glow worms" in the pitch-black caves. I had looked at a few options, including repelling and taking a boat, but for some reason I was most attracted to floating down the frigid water in a tube. ... the world famous Tongaririo Alpine Track. It was 19.4km to our pick up point at Ketetahi. We’d been given an estimate of six to eight hours to complete the route.
After looking at one another in a way that said ‘I can’t believe we’re actually here…!’ Debbie and I hauled our rucksacks on, took obligatory touristy pictures and hit the track, alongside the million other people who had decided to take on the walk that day.
