It was with great excitement that we explored the countryside of Fargo as my O'Hara ancestors settled here from Ireland. I do not understand why they chose this area. To be sure there is a great deal of farming but the land and weather would have been unrelenting and harsh.The land is created by a glacier and is wide and sloping with small glades of trees only where the farmhouses are so I think were planted there. Roosevelt National Park is pretty amazing, it highlights the conservation efforts of President Roosevelt, his life story and even contains one of the cabins he lived in when he visited and hunted in North Dakota. Roosevelt was pretty much responsible for saving the Bison from extinction although when he first arrived in the area he was so worried ...

... We drove all the way through Minnesota to Fargo, North Dakota, about 500 miles. Minnesota has a lot of marginal land with deciduous trees, mostly poplar. In fact we saw a tree farm planted in small poplars. The last hundred miles was more open with fields of corn, wheat, soy beans and tobacco. We also saw several poultry farms and there were a lot of horse trailers ...

So, being the smart individuals we are (stop laughing!), we decided on a campground halfway to the National Park. It was another Army Corp site just north of a town known as Valley City, North Dakota. What did we have to lose?
