... up the bikes for a couple of days ride. So next morning, after an early start we headed to Westport through the Lewis Pass. It was a lovely day, weather wise and apart from some idiot car drivers, we had one of the best rides we have had in the South Island. A short stop at Springs Junction, then onto Westport – there wasn’t much open but we managed to find a great restaurant for dinner and booked into a motel for the night.

I took Lewis Pass for the drive to Westport. The scenery was good. Lots of yellow and green valleys at first then into the forest.

Arrived in Westport Nov 26. I just surfed there and visited a coal museum which was interesting. ...

... the sights! It turns out there
is not only Hope Saddle, but there is a Mount Hope, and a Mount Hopeless... oh
and a Mount Robert! All viewable from
the Hope Saddle trig point.

Another quick stop at Maruia Falls gave some cool views and
a leg stretch. The falls are interesting as they were actually formed as a
result of a fairly recent earthquake.

We also came cross our first big herd of sheep on the way,

We packed up our things and left Queenstown in order to see the spectacular Catlins in the southeast. The drives continue to amaze me here...there is so much untouched land that it's almost hard to comprehend the magnitude of it all.
