Immediately after lunch we enter the beautiful Split Mountain Canyon. The rock layers visible where the river cut into the mountain, and the general upheaval surrounding the entrance are amazing. I am certain that I am using too many words like beautiful, amazing, stunning, and so forth, but I simply cannot come up with enough different words to praise the scenery.

... the end of the story - in the morning Glenn was resigned to losing his rope, but Jill and Greg kept working at it. We were starting to think that it would be a game for future campers at Jones Hole 3 for years, but to great cheering, they finally freed it from the tree.

One extra note - Tevas are the traditional river footwear, especially for women. I have included a photo of the Tevas, and what our feet look like after spending much time on the river!

... Quarry Visitor Center. There are a few stops to see some small fossils along the trail. There are lots of other hiking trails in the park but I didn't have time to take any of them.

I enjoyed Dinosaur National Monument. I don't believe there are any other places where you can see so many fossils still in the rock.

We were planning a long drive today, so we got up early and left SD, driving through Wyoming and headed for Vernal, Utah. This leg of the trip is over 500 miles so we wanted to get an early start. We left the campground, turned left and soon found ourselves back on the curvy, up and down roads to get us out of the Black Hills.
