Before
writing this day’s journey, I want to fill you in on our adventures
from yesterday. We had a delightful day of leisurely choice in
Dawson with bags out yesterday at 7:30 and departure at 8:30. We
left Dawson on our way to Whitehorse. We had a long 8 hour bus ride
with several stops for some photo opportunities and some for food and
potty breaks. It is beautiful but desolate countryside. Rarely did
we see a...

Da ...
... weeks of accumulated recycling (and collected over $3.00 from deposits on aluminum cans, plastic bottles, glass, and juice containers), and some grocery shopping. It sure helped to know our way around Whitehorse already. Oh, yes, we also stopped by the Yukon Brewery to buy two six-packs of Lead Dog Ale. If you are not the lead dog, the view is always the same !! We would have bought more beer if we had known that U.S. Customs would not even ask us about liquor.
Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada 2jgstl... since the Yukon River is flowing north here. Those of us who have lived our lives along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers know that a river should flow south and / or east. The Fish Ladder at this dam is quite interesting, with viewing windows. The Salmon are still downstream near Dawson City. They should reach Whitehorse in another two weeks.
The Yukon Territorial government building is small and modern. It was built in the 1970s. The security guard let us ...
... he does tidy up as he goes but sometimes right at the end of preparations, things may stack up. I get to clean those along with our dinner dishes. Often, we use paper plates….especially if we’re dry camping but when we have water & electricity hookups, we both prefer the real thing. Regardless of our situation, we always have cloth napkins. Wendell detests paper and I don’t care either way; they’re washable and we have plenty.

Stopped at Caribou Crossing, which is a place the tour buses bring people--very touristy and not worth the stop. Also stopped at Emerald Lake, which was beautiful.
At the Whitehorse Visitor Center, watched a 15-minute film about the Yukon. Found out many of the attractions do not open until June--Trolley, boat to Miles Canyon ...
... to go 'out' in Jan/Feb. We have added a new player, a young woman, Maegan, from ON who has curled a lot and now appears to be our third. We have ended up on the B side of our competitive night and still can't seem to find the winning way although we curl well, the others curl really well. Clearly, the new shoes and stabilizer aren't doing their jobs! We still are teaching curling once a week to school kids. There is a really strong School program here. Hugh is ...
Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada hcb... the 2010 Sr. Nationals right after the Vancouver Olympics. We have been skiing the flatter trails as they have the best snow cover in early season. This AM it was -19 with hoar frost everywhere. We skied out and got to a sunny point to soak up some rays. The hoar frost was on every tree and bush. Truly spectacular!! Our circle of friends is growing. We went out to a friend's acreage about 1/2h from town last W/E for a ski, potluck dinner and ...
Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada hcb... close to Skagway at sea level. The first two days we hiked up through coastal rain forest. We got to know what hiking in mud is like. When we asked about the weather conditions, we were told that hiking in the forest canopy we would be protected from the rain. We found they were right! It was damp but comfortable hiking. Shorts, gaiters and a long sleeve T shirt worked rain or shine. We saw the sun 2x in the first three days. The trail itself is well trodden. The first ...
Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada hcbSkagway lies about 100 miles south of Whitehorse, so we decided that instead of packing up and pulling the trailer down to Skagway, we would leave the trailer in Whitehorse and drive to Skagway for the day. One of the nicest parts of Skagway is the drive in. The scenery is beautiful if the day is clear. Along the drive there are mountains, both bare and snow covered, lakes, bright blue and emerald ...
