Historical Traveler Reviews of Westin St Francis Hotel San Francisco
Disappointed....
from A TripAdvisor Member
Stayed at St. Francis June 23-28, 2003 and were disappointed in our $225.00 room. It was in the new tower with a "view of the city and bay". You could barely see the bay thru the buildings. It was a beautiful view at night though. The price was way too high for "a view". Stay in the older part for a much less expensive room w/o a "view". San Fran has been ruined by the homeless. You cant walk 10 steps w/o one begging for money. Its very dirty now thanks to them. No return trips for us. KR Ocala, Fl
Martinis at the Compass Rose Bar
from A TripAdvisor Member
I intended to have a drink or two at the Rose Bar and then just have a walk around dowtown San Francisco, but 4 martinis later plus a very tasty cheese platter, I am still sipping martinis listening to some really cool late night supper jazz. I chatted with members of the jazz band, the friendly waiters who were making fantastic martinis and a wonderful elderly couple who in their 'hayday' were singers and musicians. They were in the early 80's, always lived in downtown San Fran, use to play the clubs and that night came to listen to the classy jazz being played in the Rose Bar. I had a wonderful, entertaining night, meeting locals and feeling right at home. I will never forget that evening. I recommend this bar to anyone going to SF.........Lynda, Sydney, Australia
Just old,too expensive
from A TripAdvisor Member
Only good thing was location. Air conditioning was too loud to sleep. This hotel is too old. I didn't parked my car at the hotel because their vallet parking was $39. So I asked bell man to carry my stuff to my room then he charged me $25 for deliver fee! That was so ridiculous. Everything was just expensive.

Beautiful lobby, great location and good service. Sorely in need of touch-ups and airing out. Room needed bathrrom work and smelled musty. Wouldn't stay here again; the Grand Hyatt around the corner was same price and well worth it.
Loved the Westin St.Francis

On my recent trip to California we ended our stay at the Westin St.Francis. This hotel was one of three that we stayed at in California and it was among the best. The staff was courteous and helpful. The hotel appearance is beautiful from the restaurants to the shops to the rooms. They are very well manicured. The heavenly beds are just that. The heavenly showers are even better. We felt that we couldn't get any better location then staying right there in Union Square. You are in the heart of the city. The cable cars are located right outside among tons of shops. The city itself was wonderful and fun but staying at the Westin St.Francis made it that much more memorable.
I Left My Heart In The Westin St Francis!

Westin St Francis, San FranciscoDate of visit: Sunday 11 May Wednesday 14 May 2003An imposing building on Union Square ideally located for exploring the city. The interior public spaces are sumptuous and well maintained matching the grand exterior. The shops, café and Compass Rose bar bring a liveliness to the lobby area.Reception staff were friendly and welcoming. The doorman was particularly gracious when the dust from our car (fresh from a drive through Death Valley and Yosemite) blemished his immaculate uniform when unloading our suitcases.A glass lift took us to our room which was spacious, well furnished and well maintained. The Heavenly bed lived up to its name extremely comfortable with clean crisp white bed linen. A spacious wardrobe contained real coat hangers (increasingly a rarity in hotels and always a joy to find!) The bathroom was spotless and kept well stocked with Molton Brown products and included a Heavenly double-headed shower. The room was kept immaculate throughout our stay. Although we did experience some minor problems - a broken light and blocked WC - these were resolved quickly by friendly maintenance staff. The hotel felt reassuringly secure. When returning to our room (open whilst it was being cleaned) to collect a forgotten wallet, the maid asked us to demonstrate that our key fitted the door.Although on Sunday evening, the panelled Oak Room Restaurant was very quiet and lacked atmosphere, the food and service were both of the highest standard the cioppino was particularly good. We also enjoyed informal dining in the Compass Rose bar with our excellent food accompanied by a three piece band. Our stay at the Westin St Francis was part of a three week tour of the West Coast of the USA. This hotel ranked among the best of the twelve hotels that we visited - Westin is definitely our preferred hotel chain putting other reputable hotel names to shame.
OK but don't pay high price

Big elegant old hotel. Bed quite comfortable. But indifferent service for such a big hotel. Bathroom only okay, not fancy. A decent deal at a low price (less than $150) but not worth higher price.
Location great, but older rooms noisy
from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in the older tower in a room that overlooked Union Square. The room was renovated beautifully, but there was one major problem: noise. You could hear your neighbors' entire conversations! You could even hear newspapers dropped off at 6AM in the morning (I actually heard the newspaper hit the carpet outside our door). If you're looking for peace and quiet, this is not the place to be. Also, the staff were not very helpful when told about the noise issue (it's almost like they knew the problem existed, but weren't willing to do any thing about it). We're staying at a quiet boutique hotel next time.
Very nice hotel

My husband and I have stayed here several times, most recently on 12/21/02 for one night after attending a concert. It is a lovely hotel, old but well restored. I think the special bargain rate rooms are always offered in the older tower, but those rooms are very nicely renovated and furnished, with very nice bathrooms and bed linens. The location is fantastic... right across the street from Union Square, Macys, and untold things to do and see. A few things made our last visit less enjoyable than before: the hotel (lobby, elevators, restaurants, etc.) was extremely crowded due to the Holiday crowds, the service in the Oak Room coffee shop was very slow next morning, and although we got a real bargain rate, we wound up with a double bed that was just too small to be comfortable to someone used to sleeping on a king.
But I'm sure we'll stay here again... we'll just be careful about the bed next time!
Great Location

The staff was wonderful. Our room was wonderful. The beds are just like they call them, heavenly. The beds are down pillows and down conforters. The rooms are kind of generic but they have a wonderful view and you are right in UNION SQUARE with the best shopping right at your feet. The trolley runs right in front of the hotel so if you are a tourist this is great!!! This hotel is beautiful and I like it better then than the Grand Hyatt a few streets over. I would stay here again for the location and service! Enjoy SF because it is truely breath taking!
