    Staff training needed

    from

The hotel itself is gorgeous, very clean smart and impressive.

The service however is another matter.

The restarant, Blue Orange is large and has a varied menu, the waiters are too few and far betwee, seem to have had little training, and take a whole meals duration to bring drinks.

The pool is nice, but the bridges over the pool are painted black, resulting in burnt soles of feet when I stepped on it not realising it would have been heated up that much by the 40 degree heat.

The lighting system in the rooms in mind boggling, you have to press numerous buttons to turn the light on in the bathroom, not funny at 4am when you need the toilet! (you have to turn it on from the other side of the room!)

The hotel is charging far too much at the moment for a service which is more 3 star than 5. Would stay again, but when the hotel has had chance to reflect on its level of service.

There have been issues in the first week of opening that relate to both systems and in some cases service, however, we are sure that you can appreciate that when employing 600 new associates in a property of this size, not every aspect of service may be perfect within the first week.

We would like to assure that any guest staying at The Westin will have a most enjoyable stay and I am sure that you will notice with the special opening promotions that are in place at the moment, it is priced extremely reasonably for the service and facilities offered. We are confident that you will leave renewed and extremely happy.

    Bigger is not always better!

    from

Our 10-day stay at the 'Westin Mina Seyahi' Dubai started on the 3rd day after the hotel opened.

We had booked an all-inclusive holiday with Virgin Holidays from the UK. At check-in, they had us down for half-board and it took a while to sort out that we were, in fact, fully inclusive. The check-in was slow but we were eventually showed to our sea-view deluxe room. This was very spacious with a 50" LG flat-screen TV, a nice balcony with very good views of the resort, the beach and the sea. The bathroom was very nice with a rainfall shower and a nice deep bath. As we were the first people to stay in the room, everything was clean and tidy and all items in working order, including a coffee machine and a mini-bar. However, why only one wash basin? Two is the accepted standard in 5* today.

We were informed that we could use any bar or restaurant in this hotel and any in the sister hotel next door (the 'Le Meridian Mina Seyahi') including the 'Dowe', a floating fish restaurant in the marina adjacent to the Meridian. This all turned out to be excellent value for money!

The 'Blue Orange' buffet at the 'Westin' was at best slow, and at worst disorganised and impersonal, with a stupid 5-station layout offering the same boring food at each meal and apparently, no structure to the service and you had to guess what was available as no labels were provided for many dishes. The staff were not well trained and many had a problem with the English language. We found ourselves using the 'Waves' buffet at the 'Meridian' for most of our buffet meals after day 3, as the service and variety on offer was so much better, in fact second to none, with helpful staff, fresh high quality food and a total opposite to the 'Blue Orange' at the 'Westin'. If you wanted any food item that was not on the buffet, just ask and if they have it, they will provide/cook it for you there and then! Ronny and his team at the 'Waves' were just fantastic and a credit to the hotel.

The other restaurants we visited were 'Hunters', a steak bar, with fantastic food, great service, great ambiance but with a chef that had a real problem with too much garlic in many dishes, quite a shame! Then the 'Spice Emporium', serving the most fantastic Asian food in a very nice sophisticated setting. Finally, the 'Dowe', with a downstairs air-conditioned floor and an upstairs open-air floor serving fine fish dishes with live music upstairs and an ambiance for that romantic evening you will love.

The poolside bar food was very good but very slow. The 'Barasti Bar' food was good but again the service was quite slow. This was a nice place to have a drink in the evening and was always very lively at night with many visitors from the marina area.

There was also an Italian restaurant, 'The Bussola' that always seemed empty, so we took the hint and did not eat there.

Overall, (excluding the 'Blue Orange') the food was good and always presented with flair and love, by friendly, polite staff that pre-empted our needs and made us feel welcome and appreciated.

Now I realise this hotel is new (and unfinished in parts) but there is no excuse for a dirty pool (no matter if it is the largest body of water in Dubai). I reported black slime was growing on the tiles and grout by day 2 of the holiday and I was informed by the pool manager that the pool had not yet been signed off to the hotel by the contractors! This problem was only getting better by day 7 and this was never fully addressed. A shortage of staff at the pool area made getting drinks service a very hit and miss affair. Young children had a kiddies pool but were also allowed into the big pool and after an accident, faeces was polluting the pool for 4 hours one day before being cleaned, and despite this problem being reported several times, the area affected was never shut off! Ridiculous! People were walking/swimming through this mess! Very nasty!

We had to call 'express services' every day, sometimes 3 or 4 times a day.

The coffee machine items were never replaced without a call.

The mini-bar was never re-filled without a call.

We had to call to get the room serviced on 5 days out of 9 as it was not done by 5pm.

We hope these things were just teething problems and the hotel will get things sorted out soon.

All the above prove that bigger is not always best. My wife and her friend stayed at the 'Meridian' in March, and could not fault any part of the experience. The management should take note, we expected better from the 'Westin' and the only thing she found better than the 'Meridian' was the size of our room! Everything else was below the high standards achieved at the 'Meridian'.

We can recommend Dubai. The weather, the people, a fantastic holiday destination, with no mosquitoes or bugs to eat you (in March and May anyway) as a clean, service oriented tourist hot spot. The 'Westin' was disappointing in many ways but don't let our experience put you off, because I am sure Mr Mike Scully (the general manager) and his team, will iron out these problems and the 'Westin' will become the 5 star experience that it should have been from the off.

There have been issues in the first week of opening that relate to both systems and in some cases service, however, we are sure that you can appreciate that when employing 600 new associates in a property of this size, not every aspect of service may be perfect within the first week.

    Great Location, Needs to improve

    from

We checked into this hotel during the first week of opening, ok there were always going to be teething problems, but with occupancy rates kept low during the first few days, you would think that they would be responsive to any problems encountered by guests and respond quickly when things went wrong.

The location of the hotel is good. Rooms are of a good size, with good bathrooms and great views of Jumairah Palm from upper floors, although some rooms have better views than others. Most rooms have balconies, but some do not - check on arrival.

The public areas are very impressive (apart from the Blue & Orange Restaurant), and the enormous pool, outside areas and beach are great (when all the finishing touches have been completed).

    BUT:

Check-in was terrible, staff were slow, and most unwelcoming, no smiles etc. The check-in desk was rather small for a hotel of this size, I would not like to arrive when it was busy. Having paid for a delux sea-view room we were unhappy with being offered a ground floor room! After kicking up a fuss we eventually got offered a room on a higher level

Food in the Blue & Orange Restaurant was terrible. The decor is hideous, reminding me of a train station cafeteria. You could choose from various food stations that served different regional food, Chinese, Indian, Arabic, international, Sushi etc. Food stood around in heated trays and looked dried out, un-appetizing and most unappealing. Other hotels in Dubai offer similar set-ups but seem to do more cooking to order and have less food standing around. Staff were very new and seemed to lack confidence, as a result service was slow and really needs to improve. Better organisation and a few more smiles would be good.

The Hunter restaurant (steak) was very nice, but again there seemed to be a problem about booking tables. The restaurant seemed to struggle with taking a reservation, but the alternative the Express Service (one phone number for all your needs - booking tables, room service, reporting problems was NEVER answered). Staff in the restaurant were very friendly and the food was very good, but on the expensive side.

Rooms were good and very comfortable, but who decided on the overly complicated phone system and master switch console! Mini bar was only stocked with soft drinks, and not fully stocked until the final day of my 5 day stay, I was then charged for all the alcohol that was finally put in on the last evening. The coffee machine was great, but the staff did not seem to know how to empty it, and supplies were not always replenished. The quality of the room cleaning was also not up the level you would expect, with surfaces not being dusted/polished. They need to put more hangers in cupboards - far to few for two people.

The service around the pool/beach was chaotic. I understand another bar will shortly be opening, but you almost had to rugby tackle staff to get a drink. At the weekend, the pool area filled up and there seemed a shortage of sun beds, worrying as the hotel was not full. The pool itself was FABULOUS - it meanders across the front of the hotel, the water is cool and refreshing, the lap pool is also staffed much later than other hotel pools I have used in Dubai. Downside, other hotels of this rating offer nice gestures such as cold face towels, no such offerings here.

Getting a taxi also seemed to be a problem, a couple of times we were directed to the hotel limos which we did not want and which were expensive. 'Just get us a regular taxi' became the standard request.

I know the hotel had just opened, but they were happy to take our money. We tried to be patient and understanding, but at times when things did go wrong, we really had to battle to get something done about it.

Service levels need to be greatly improved upon. Staff need to be more friendly and watch and anticipate the needs of guests. When things go wrong, guests should not feel as if they have to go to battle to get things rectified. Food in the Blue and Orange needs to greatly improve and this was most certainly not up to Dubai standards.

    WOULD I STAY THERE AGAIN

As I have said, the actual building, pool, beach and location are fantastic, but the level of service needs to improves in line with what other hotels are offering. I am sure that once the teething problems have been sorted out this will be a great hotel and one which I would consider returning to again.

Great hotel just a few teething problems

    from

We have just returned from a 6 night stay at The Westin and did have a great holiday. The hotel itself is amongst one of the best hotels I have stayed at on Jumeirah Beach. The Colonial finish, Marble lobby,Beautiful chandelers and great pool area all made this is a stunning hotel.

Our rooms were alot bigger than average and I was very impressed, with expresso coffee makers, Plasma TV'S and DVD players we had everything we needed.

We did visit Oeno (the hotels wine bar) which we thoroughly enjoyed, we had a choice of over 400 wines and sat on the sofas listening to the live band it was a great experience!. The staff here were fantastic, very chatty and friendly and did attend to all of your needs- as I must say most of the hotels staff did. The only problem we did have was in The Blue Orange Buffett Restaurant!

We tried to understand and be patient on several occasions with the staff being new and all, but there was just no organisation or structure in the restaurant. We thought that staff were allocated a certain area of the restaurant and would look after that area-clearing plates, taking drink orders and generally looking after the clients, but this didnt seem the case. You would be lead around the restaurant looking for a spare table and looking a bit lost!.

We was once sat at a table which had no cutlery or anything, nobody acknowledged us or came over to see if we would like a glass of water or a drink. After 20 minutes of waiting we decided to go and get our food, we came back and was still not offered any drinks or cutlery in fact the only time we were acknowledged by a member of staff was when they thought we were leaving and they chased after us with our bill!

My overall experience was a good one and I think once the dust settles and staff gain experience this will be an amazing hotel

    Improvement required

    from

Having stayed at numerous hotels in Dubai over the last 8 years i was looking forward to staying in a brand new 5 star establishment on Jumeriah beach. The hotel had literaly opened the day we arrived so a few teething problems were to be expected and we were not disapointed, all of the following are not enough to spoil a break but enough to cause agitation, room not serviced for 3 days, mini bar (which was soft drinks only) not re-plenished in 8 days, restaurant service was poor with staff not aware of customers needs, in the buffet restaurant we found other people sat at our table when returning with food, long waits for simple things like water, plates not cleared, wrong cutlery, given wrong bills with service cards already completed, change of paramiters of half board the day we arrived ( the buffet restaurant was free and originaly we could have 120 dirham contribution to the bill in the other restaurants, on arrival this was cut to 60 less than £9 which would not cover a starter), staff around the pool were rarely around for assistance and with only 1 pool bar operational on 150 meter pool they should have been around more. I am sure things will improve with time and need to as the prices the property are looking to charge in the future will need to come with much higher service levels.

There have been issues in the first week of opening that relate to both systems and in some cases service, however, we are sure that you can appreciate that when employing 600 new associates in a property of this size, not every aspect of service may be perfect within the first week.

    Muss verbessert werden

    from

    Mostly finished but dissapointing

    from

Some minor building/cosmetic work still outstanding but nothing that should really effect your stay. Nice rooms, nice pool, nice Hotel. However some aspects of the Service and quality have a very long way to go.

We are regular vistors to Dubai and have just returned from a 9 night stay at the Westin on a halfboard basis.

Initially dissapointed on arrival to find that many brochures have included the facilities of Le Meridian Mina Seyahi, which is the sister hotel next door, in their description of the Westin facilities. The restaurant/pool/bar etc choices quoted in many brochures are a total for both hotels.

We were aware that the Hotel had just opened (a 'soft' opening with some floors deliberately left unoccupied) and fully expected some teething problems of which we had our share, but nothing really major.Having spoken to other guests I think we were lucky with the most tedious problem being the room was not serviced two days in a row.

One of the main reasons we and may others return to Dubai year on year is the outstanding service across the board.

The Service however in the Blue Orange(buffet) and the Pool bar was at best chaotic and at times simply annoying and there was effectively no Service around the pool itself.

Ignoring the very poor service and lack of organisation the Blue Orange buffet restaurant is simply not in line with the Hotels star rating. If you choose the halfboard option the Blue Orange buffet is most likely were you will eat most of your meals. You can use other restaurants in either hotel for lunch or dinner but your 60 dm £8.70 food only allowance won't get you far. 30 dm for children.

It will be interesting to see how this Hotels prices settle as I suspect they may ultimately charge a premium simply because it is new. The service problems I assume will be addressed and perhaps other areas need to be reviewed.

I would suggest there are a number of existing Hotels on the beach that given overall setting/facilities/food/service/price I would revisit before the Westin.

There have been issues in the first week of opening that relate to both systems and in some cases service, however, we are sure that you can appreciate that when employing 600 new associates in a property of this size, not every aspect of service may be perfect within the first week.

    Had A Great Time

    from

We booked our trip through Best At Travel (Jason). He recommended the hotel and trusted his advice, we were not disappointed.

Westin was fantastic, rooms were very spacious and food was to a high standard, Blue orange offered a great variety and always tasted good.

Only down side was the check-in/out but seen we arrived on the opening day this was easy to over-look.

We will def be back and don't be put off.

Most disorganised hotel I have ever been to

    from

Extremely disorganised hotel! We decided to spend one night over the weekend at the hotel and it was one of the biggest mistakes ever.

It took them 1 hour to check us into a room with the wrong type of bed. Having kept us waiting in that room they then transfer us to a room with a king size bed only for it to be a non-smoking room, having specifically requested a smoking room.

They rooms had such a complicated phone system that we had no idea how to use it and no one told us anything about it when showed to our rooms .

There was no hot water. When the hot water issue was resolved, we had another problem; dirty hot water!

Dinner at the orange blue restaurant tasted great but we ended up with upset stomachs the whole night!

Check out took another hour and we were charged for items that we had never used !

We had stayed there a week after it opened and that might explain the issues we faced but it sure is no excuse for a 5 star hotel that charged us an arm and a leg for a night stay!

There have been issues in the first week of opening that relate to both systems and in some cases service, however, we are sure that you can appreciate that when employing 600 new associates in a property of this size, not every aspect of service may be perfect within the first week.
