Our first real stop is a place called Kootenai Falls. It's a short hike to a very fast flowing and large river and some nice waterfalls. The hike is easy, and the only real workout is from a large set of stairs after crossing a bridge over some train tracks.

I didn't get to bed Monday night, at 2:30 or so I left home and drove to Ben's, on the way the driver's window of the Subaru decided it didn't like going up or down any more and stopped in the mid range. The last 80 or 90kms I had a gale force cold wind blowing in on me!

... resulted in a group of Cayuse attacking the mission and killing the Whitmans and several other whites. 50 women and children were taken captive. The killings ended Protestant missions in the Oregon country and led to war against the Cayuse by a volunteer militia. We were disappointed to find that no buildings remain on the site, but there is a walking trail with informative reader boards containing many interesting details about the mission.
