... felt like mayhem! Saying that, the area we were staying in, Paulista, was super nice; there were lots of bars and cafes, and the MASP, a huge art museum that is famous for being the biggest structure supporting by two pillars (or something like that...) and we were right next to the main city avenue, Pauilista. The avenue is home to some huge book shops - which we discovered were the place to be on Sunday! The city was ghostly empty until we walked into a bookstore and ...

Not content with the relative calm of this beautiful market, Ramin takes us to the streets nearby where chaos rules. Clutching my handbag close we are in an Easter show-like press of humanity with hawker stalls of everything football, knock off designer sunglasses and clothing, shops ...

... t seem to matter much because we were all pretty excited to finally be in Brazil

We were met by our guide, Fernando. Right from the start, Fernando was great. He was full of information and interesting facts. Unfortunately, it started raining almost as soon as we got on the bus. It really didn't fit in with the plans for a walking tour of the city but Fernando gave us the opportunity and everyone was gung-ho. Lets just walk it in the rain!

    ... in a darkened room.

The total value of what I bought was about £4.

Still puzzling over it all, we arrived at Mercado Municipal, an enormous food market in a beautiful old building with stained glass windows. There are literally hundreds of food stalls, selling everything from steak to chocolate covered strawberries. The mezzanine is packed with restaurants, and my knobbly elbows ensured that we got a table at one of the most popular ones, squeezed in alongside ...
