US muesli to start the day. Purchased tickets for the open top double decker bus tour of New York. Bought a 72 hour pass to include Downtown, Uptown, Brooklyn and Night tour loops. Set off on the Downtown loop on a bright sunny crisp morning. much the same as many city tours but loved the guides black drool and sense of humour was fun with the US accent. All the usual landmark Empire State Building, Times Square and Rockefeller Center. Lunch at ...

... rest.

The next day we hit him the Natural History Museum which wasn't nearly as great. It was most certainly directed at a younger audience so it was a bit of a let down compared to how amazing The Met was. All the same we made a day of it and got so see real live dinosaur bones. We saw a herd of elephants and a giant blue whale. A lot of the exhibits were out dated but we let them off simply because they had a Maori section under the Pacific Island people section. Jason did a ...

Hey y'all! (cringe!) Lots to tell.. Thought I'd take the opportunity to write our next blog as we have a spare hour or so to kill.
We had a great few days in New York, on Saturday we went on a "city cruise" through the Hudson River with a tour guide telling us all about Manhattan and of course we got up close and personal with the Statue of Liberty... Our verdict.. She needs to smile lol. But yes, great statue, does what it says on the tin.
We mastered the subway by our second ...

Day one.. New York

... of the day as I sit opposite whole foods and their oh too familiar array of muffins. It's been 18 months since I last saw Amy within which period we seem to have swapped hairstyles. Being the lovely bubbling girl that she is I arrived to a set of keys to her bike lock (and accompanying helmet), an itinerary of things to do in the local area and a number for her friends who were in the area today. Bike at the ready I set out, after stalking a couple ...

... in Rockefeller Plaza. 15 people including me enter a lift that takes us 67 floors in 43 seconds. We emerge into the glorious view that is the New York City skyline. Taking photos and admiring the view, I go through all three levels of viewing platforms before heading back downstairs for a stop at Starbucks and to try one of NYC’s best macaron’s at Bouchon Bakery – they’re tasty but honestly I think I’ve had better at home made by friends! Made a grown man cry!!!!!

    from anonymous

Please, please, please stay away from this sorry excuse for a hotel. Ok so we booked a late trip and went for the cheaper option but this place takes the biscuit. On entry the place doesnt look so bad but you just wait till you see the rooms. In fact, no don't wait to see the rooms, just don't go!!! Read the advice above a stay away..........

    Do not go there

    from anonymous

oh how i wish i'd read the rest of these reviews before i booked! it was horrible. dirty and disgusting. i burst into tears when i saw the room, but we had no choice but to stay there. the whole place was filthy. the shared toilets (2 rooms with a loo and crap shower between each floor of at least 15 rooms) where smelly and dirty, with limited hot water. the bed was rancid and stained and gave no support, we slid into the dent in the middle as soon as we got in it. there were really noisy pipes running floor to ceiling through the room. the door didn't fit in the frame and the window didn't close properly. i could go on all day about what was wrong. just don't bother.

Dirty, Filthy, Smelly... Need I Say More?

    from anonymous

I booked to go NYC and was exceptionally excited... until i saw this (and i use this in the loosest possible term!) "hotel". Upon arrival i knew i'd made a mistake, the staff were rude, the reception was dirty and smelt! When i got to my room the door had been kicked in and what looked like droppings were in the corridor! My room had a broken window, a sad filthy hole in the wall for a wardrobe, the bed was broken and sheets were filthy! The light... well there was no light switch let alone a light! The view from the window was of a lovely brick wall, the toilets were apalling, filthy, mouldy and to put it politely infested! It was the worst place i have ever ever seen in my life.... i collected my suitcase and left immediately i didnt dare sleep in the hotel! I seriously reccomend you think long and hard before staying here!

    Hotel from hell

    from anonymous

These were the most disgusting rooms i have ever entered in my life.

The place was absolutely filthy, there was not a stick of furniture where you could hang your clothes. the windows were so dirty you could not see through them. the linen was grey ,the doors had been kicked in ,lights did not work,we found a used condom under a bed.the bathrooms were dirty, broken basins and fittings and the hallways and lifts stank of urine and worse.it was described on the net as clean and comforable nothing could be further from the truth. give this place a very wide berth .ECK. our visit was october 2003......

    Horrible horrible horrible

    from anonymous

please please do not stay here. its hell on earth - the seediest, creepiest, dirtiest hotel i've ever had the misfortune to stay in. it is a broken down flop house with no amenities, small dirty room and indifference service. we nicknamed it bate's motel for good reason, the whole atmosphere is downright spooky. dark dingey sqaulid place. avoid avoid avoid avoid.

    Stay away!

    from anonymous

Awful place.. nice neighbourhood, but the place is a dump. Arrogant staff, even missed a meeting with a friend because of these idiots..door wouldn't close properly, the toilet was broken, tv wasn't working at all, nice view to a brick wall one foot away.. v e r y thin walls, cockroaches.. need I say more?

We cancelled the rest of our stay

    from anonymous

It was cheap, but the hallways smelt of urine and the public bathrooms were not kept clean. I could feel the springs through the bed and the sheets were so thin you could see through them.

    Awful place!

    from anonymous

This place really was the pits! Cheap, but really a dive! Bunk beds, cracked windows, noise, dark lighting, not very clean and the customer service was really terrible! They have no clue about customer satisfaction - I will never go back, that's for sure. Honestly, I would prefer to sleep on the sidewalk outside the hotel than cross the threshold to that piece of rubbish!

    Avoid at all cost...

    from anonymous

This hotel is dreadful. It is dirty and cramped. Our room had bunk beds, a sink, a light that sometimes worked and a dodgy perspex window with no catch and that was it. No TV, no A/C not anything else. The only positive was the communal shower had fantastic water pressure! All in all, pay $20 dollars a night more and stay in a much nicer and much better located hotel.

    Suprisingly good

Was referred to West Side Inn after contacting sister hotel. was not in any guidebook I had so had no idea what it would be like. Suprised to find that it was friendly, very clean and had the most comfortable bed of my trip to the States!! Bathrooms clean, staff very helpful. Best of all a great price for a hotel that allows you to access most of the city, very close to shops and a subway station. Would recommend highly for travellers on a budget.
