... journey on the very road outside the information centre which was 'The Mother Road'. Illinois, the state we are starting in, has a series of very good R66 signs to show you your way through the state. Some towns along the route are more interested in the history of 66 than others but I am sure if you looked hard enough you would find something about the old road in every town. Today we travelled from Joliet to Wilmington ...

... next barge pushed a loaded barge also 3 boats wide, to join the first one.

Okay it's not everyone's cup of tea, but we got fascinated by ships and locks 40+ years ago when we went to the UK by ship via the Panama Canal.
Then while in the UK we went on a couple of Canal boat holidays and again we had fun entering the locks but they're a lot smaller so one physically opened and shut ...

Following this was the main course with mashed potatoes and gravy, meatballs with sweet-chilli sauce, green ...

Weathers improving ....slightly...stopped raining but still cold. Forecast for tomorrow into high seventies so that is a definite improvement. Progress is slow at the moment because every time we ask an American a question they just want to talk, and how they can talk!!! Nice though . Visited the war museum and the Route 66 museum at Pontiac, really interesting. The bike really uses lots of fuel, only did 100 miles and needed to refill it, it cost an outstanding $7 ...

Happy birthday to my love and my favorite clown, John! We celebrated after the show with wine, junk food, and four episodes of "Girls". A very lovely day which would have only been lovelier if we could have spent it with friends and family back home. But everyone sent John wonderful birthday greetings throughout the entire day, so I know we weren't far from people's thoughts. :)
