    ... blankets a much better night's sleep than we have had since Hampi, and we had a nice long lie in with more films in the morning.The next day was Diwali so all of India was out in style and we were surrounded by fireworks all through the day and night.     ... young lady, Keerthika, and her mother (from nearby Coonoor) at Domino's and had a nice conversation with them.

    Among other things, I learned from her that in India, Northerners look down on Southerners because the Southerners are darker! Imagine that! For this reason, Southerners tend to stick together, she said - marrying mostly within their region. She also said that she would never marry a foreigner, which pretty much rules me out.

    ... needed a copy of my passport, which I didn’t happen to have. So we went into town together and made a copy of my passport at a local copy shop – for 1 rupee – which he magnanimously paid for me. He promised me that the device would be here in Ooty at 17:00 this evening. (It had to be ordered from the nearest big city, Coimbatore, from where it would be shipped by bus.)

    I had a stroll along our lane to look at the surrounding hills, and the ladies in the neighbouring houses were excited to see me and wanted to talk. One invited me into her home for chai but I had to get back because Shankar was cooking my lunch of herb potatoes, soya stew and chapatties.
