19 December Gentle start to the day, then we were on the road again by ten or thereabouts. Stopped at Pukeko Junction for brunch as recommended, then continued to Kaikoura. Found a nice motel and emptied the car, then went to check out the obligatory whalewatching tours. Ended up going straight away (well, after a few beers in the sun) as it was difficult to call the weather and conditions. Long trip out in the fast catamaran, but then we saw plenty of sperm whales. Not leaping out the water ...
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand russdi... about whales. Kaikoura is home to sperm whales
mostly. However, all the sperm whales in Kaikoura are male because
the females and children stay in the warmer waters.

Sperm whales are the 3rd
largest whale. Their heads are about 1/3 of their body and they have
the largest brain. What really struck us was the amount of food they
have to eat a day – about one ton. In order to do this, they dive
to the bottom of the ...
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand carlaandmike... population but the drive was lived up to every bit of expectation and more.
From 'Nins Bin' it was only a short 30 minute drive to Kaikoura and we drove into town at 2:45PM. Parked up and had a look through the AA Guide Book for somewhere to bunk down for the night, but it had to have WiFi! Found the Panarama Motel and got a good special since they have virtually no one in. Phoned home again to check up on a few things and get the news ...

Et tout d'un coup cette centaine de dauphins autour de nous decide de deriver vers un autre endroit. Ils sautent au dessus de nos tete a une vitesse hallucinante et tous ensembles ...
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand kikiblogtrot... a change to book into a hostel as the night previous had been particularly cold in the van. It was certainly an experience sharing a small house with ten complete strangers for one night and I no longer need to imagine what it would be like to enter the Big Brother house. But then again, we have probably developed xenophobia from being couped up in a campervan for nearly 5 weeks! That was the evening we witnessed one of the most beautiful sunsets I have ever seen.
Auckland, New Zealand mikeandpaula_09... to do a tour - especially on the last one on the way out of Blenheim - Montana, one of my favourites. Lots of the drive was alongside the coast - almost on the beach in fact - which was wild and rocky but quite beautiful. We arrived in Kaikoura mid afternoon and found our B&B, which looks like an old French country house, but is actually only 15 years old and a complete reproduction with very pretty gardens. The town itself is very ...
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand maxnstanKaikoura is just north of Christchurch and is known for its wildlife. The ocean forms a funny ledge, which attracts many marine life including whales and dolphins. We decided to go whale watching and swim with the dolphins, all in one day. I knew there would be a high risk of seasickness, but decided it was worth the pain. Whale watching was early in the morning. We were herded onto a boat specifically designed for this purpose. The whales up on the ...
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand andreat... was beautiful, although uneventful and we returned for a beer, some dinner and a well earned early night. Stupidly, we both managed to forget about the strong sun and returned with painful red T-shirt shaped sunburn - a great new look! The evening was spent recovering from over-exposure to the sun and a desperate attempt to calm the burn before our cycle tour we're hoping to do around the wineries tomorrow.
Kaikoura, South Island, New Zealand rachandstu... had about 15 minutes out with the dolphins on this stop, and the dolphins soon moved away, so the divers climbed back onto the back of the boat, and off we set again!

In total, we had 3 spells of swimming ...
Kaikoura, New Zealand al_fey... however he was far too slow – the hotel manager had already appeared and swiftly confiscated my ball after a pretty poor shot on goal. The first thing that sprang to my mind was the old favourite cricket chant "We want the ball back! (clap, clap) (clap, clap, clap)", but being sober and polite I didn’t want to push things too much further so we had no choice but to accept our red card and return to the change rooms to have an early shower.
