The night before
School's out, work is on pause and the cottage industry is closed for Christmas. It's finally here after months of waiting and we're all beside ourselves with excitement.
The bags are packed (with space to spare thanks to Annette's frugal choice of clothes) and we have even managed to find room for Ellie much to Esther's relief.
We've got so many exciting new experiences ahead of us crammed into a 7 week trip. South East Asia here we come!

Morning of NY
Now on the way to Manchester Airport in a big taxi! Very unsettled after a strange nights sleep, waking up hoping I haven't missed the taxi. Little Mix were at the Dog and Partridge pub in my dream, tried to get a picture but my phone was broken. After trying to assure the little beauties in front of me that my camera phone will work, and my wife has to see a picture, they politely said they needed to go. Bundling into the minibus, I tried again, by this time ...
Liverpool.....Yeh, Yeh, Yeh
... used to again. On the other hand, we had a great time at the pub itself, where we spent a fun night meeting the locals, sampling the local brew and playing a trivia quiz against other teams. Besides being the only foreigners there, we were the youngsters in the crowd.
When you think Liverpool, what’s the first thing that pops into your head? Well, if you’re of our generation, it would be the Beatles, right? Well, were we ever shocked to ...
Liverpool is way cool :-)
... which was quite interesting. The Liverpool accent is something you need to hear first hand it's bizarre throw in booze and you might as well be listening to another language. Went back to the local haunt for a few warm ups and a couple of games of pool. We then ended up at the cock and bottle. The owner lady heard my accent and then went on to introduce us to everyone then got me to sing men at work's land down under on ...
Easy day =)
... from Southport and is a port town where a lot of English people vacation. It is a nice little town, but it is mostly shops. And since it was raining, we didn't go into any shops.
For tea, Edith made me extremely happy. We talked, chopped, and cooked dinner together on her new cooker. I missed cooking my own food since all of my meals were eating out or getting takeaway. This was such a treat!!! Together (well mostly Edith) we made spaghetti bolognese ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Waterford Hotel Southport
My home abroad.
The Waterford Hotel, is my home abroad. It's like visiting family. I go to England at least once a year and seeing Paul and Trina's smiling face after the long journey makes everything worth while.
They make you feel like you have known them for ever and nothing is too much trouble for either of them and always done with a smile.
I really love the ensuite bathroom, it is always immaculate and clean. the bedrooms are very tastefully decorated, with beautiful drapes and matching duvet and plenty of pillows. Also extra blankets if needed are right there in the closet.
Everything is spotless and the breakfast they serve is second to none. Starting with choice of cereal or grapefruit. Then you have your chice of breakfast. My favorite is :-English bacon cooked to perfection, farm fresh free range eggs, fried bread, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoe. Finished off with toast and marmalade. Orange juice is on the table and tea or coffee, which ever is your preference.
This is my 3rd year staying there, it is located so convieniantly. to the shops or the promenade.
With the Waterford, you can't go wrong. I just cannot praise it enough. See you again soon, Paul and Trina.
Great little hotel
Clean spacious rooms. Convenient location. nothing is too much trouble for Trina and Paul -Thanks see you again.
Wonderful Position on the waterfront
Lovely rooms with good en-suite facilities. The Hotel is in a great position along the waterfront and a few minutes walk from Lord street. Proprietors are extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast is always delicious. I have stayed at this hotel for many years and highly recommend it. Good Value.
Best Hotel
My husband and I have stayed at the Waterford Hotel on many occasions before moving north from Derby and have always found it to excellent. The Hotel is very clean and extremely comfortable, the breakfast can not be faulted both for the freshly cooked food and the service. Paul and Trina run the Hotel to a very high standard where nothing is too much trouble but have kept the familly feel to make you feel at home. We recommend the Waterford to friends and colleagues and they have all come back to us raving about the "great find" in Southport
Waterford Hotel proves top- twice!
The waterford proved the ideal hotel to meet our son and family on a short visit to the Uk in May this year.
Like ourselves they were delighted with the Hotel.
So much so in fact, that Mum and Dad booked a return visit in September.
Thanks to Paul and Trina, the proprietors, our second stay proved just as pleasing.
Fabulous Hotel
This was our second time staying at the Waterford and I cannot complement it enough. The owners, Paul and Trina make you feel like family and the rooms and en-suite bathrooms are meticulously clean and well furnished.
The location is fantastic; The Promenade is right out the front door, while great shopping on Lord Street is only a 3-minute walk away.
My personal favourite though is the included British Breakfast, which I can honestly say is the best I have ever eaten.
We will be returning to England again next year and we'll be staying at the Waterford.
Perfect
We stayed at this hotel in Autumn 2003 and it was perfect. The rooms are well kept, the food is excellent and the town centre and also the flower show are very close to this hotel. Paul and Trina (the proprietors) are very kind and helpful, and with thier daughter Joanna, they create a real family atmosphere. I would recommend this hotel to everyone without hesitation.
Home from home
We (husband and 2 children) stayed at the 'Waterford' during the end of the year in 2003 and found it to be a home from home, beautiful rooms, great location and friendly atmosphere. Southport is a lovely place made all the better by true quality hotels like this one.
What a wonderful place to stay
My mother, brother and sister-in-law have all stayed at the Waterford Hotel. Trina and Paul are wonderful. The rooms are beautiful and spotlessly clean. The food is fabulous and the atmosphere is family oriented and friendly. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone.
Lovely hotel
A beautiful hotel, lovely rooms, clean, well looked after and friendly.
