... dirt road. Fiona had gone on ahead as she needed to get to Windhoek airport in order to pick up Ant, and the rest of us met up every so often along the way.

It was a long, long day, but luckily, quite uneventful. One thing which could cause a problem is the windscreen in Susans’ car. It has begun to come loose, so it is now attached to the car with tape, which hopefully will last ...

To Waterberg Plateau Rest Camp

... We were to have many heart-stopping moments when cattle appeared out of nowhere and it was important to keep a look out. Apparently previously if you knocked a cow over you were liable for it and as you lay in a mass of mangled wreckage you would be surrounded by a crowd of angry cattle owners demanding recompense. Now things have been reversed and it is the cattle farmer that is liable, so you still lie in a mass of mangled car but ...

Malaria Dreaming...

... but he cant remember what he was dreaming about and Eddie, well he just snored... So it was supposed to be an early start this morning to reach Windhoek for our flight out to Joburgh. As we were no longer camping we decided to ditch all our camping gear. Adi wanted to douse the cheap Ebay brought tent in petrol and set it alight... but wanting good travel karma, we ended up giving away the esky, Eddies roll mat and the tent to the cleaner on ...

Planet of the Apes

Sore heads this morning, due to the booze the night before. Although Anna managed to wake early and ring home, she brought back news that Edinburgh was cold and wet and so we set about our day in the early morning 30 degree heat. Adi, Eddie and I had planned to climb to the top of the Waterburgh plateau and Anna wanted to chill out and read her book by the pool, she was happily flicking pages when approached by the gardener who as it turns out ...

Waterburg Plateau

While Eddie and Adi slept, Tenae and I decided to make the most of our final day at Etosha heading out for a drive at 6am. At the recommendation of our guide the previous night, we went around a route called Dik Dik drive. It turned out to be so worthwhile getting up as we viewed a hyena drinking at a water hole, several giraffe and zebras a couple of meters from the roadside, numerous impala on the road in front of the car and about 10 giraffes running across ...

Don't mention ze war!

For my first proper job - by proper I mean one where you couldn't wear white socks and believe me after the first day I never wore them again (gimme a break I was 16 and it was the 80s) - I stamped the backs of cheques at a bank in London. Oh yes it was as thrilling as it sounds, but the one slightly interesting thing was that the cheques were from banks all over the world drawn on their London branch. There were petite ones from ...

Seen heaps of wildlife at the Watering hole next to the campsite. Found out that a German tourist was eaten by Lions at the watering hole. Aparently he fell asleep. Heralded in the morning of the 19th with a 4am rise and sat and watched the animals at the watering hole. Not too bad. Heading off to Windhoek, The capital city of Namibia on the 19th and its one of the guys on the trucks birthday so should be a laugh.

Last Day at Okonjima

... hunters/gatherers. The Bushmen followed water, game and edible plants, and were always nomadic. They did not farm or keep animals and carried everything they possessed with them as they moved. Franz showed us how they would make rope from the 'elephant toothpick' - a green cactus looking plant that was rolled and crushed until only its fibres were left. These fibres are then rolled on the leg and platted to make rope ...

Second day at Okonjima

... using a receiver to pick up the signal from their collars. These were cheetah that had been re-introduced back into the wild and were fending for themselves. We tracked them on foot with Meldon leading the way. Very quickly I regretted having worn shorts as the bush was not very forgiving and the sharp acacia trees and grass cut my legs to ribbons. The first pair of cheetahs we tracked fairly easily and we spotted them laying in a clearing. We were able to get incredibly close ...

Okonjima

... a mining town but in the late 1990s the mine closed. Our next stop was Okahandja where the main street had quite a few shops. Sam had wanted a Namibian rugby shirt but incredibly none of the shops stocked them only South African and New Zealand tops. We found our way to a delightful curio shop but were slightly surprised that we would have to ring the bell before we could enter. Something we found to be quite common throughout Namibia. The shop was ...
