And the rain came down...

... Asha and Howard sit at the bar whilst the ladies there feed Asha and Liam chocolate icecream and shot glasses full of chocolate sprinkles. This seems to be a win-win for everyone. We then have another great Thai meal (to be honest we haven't had a bad meal since arriving) and just as the kids head out to their favourite resting place - the hammocks/swings - the heavens open. We stubbonly try to relax with our Mai ...

As we moved along the stretching beaches of Lanta, the image of bustling beach towns gradually faded into distant view, replaced by the tranquility and peacefulness of the sea.

... an artificial reef, which had been constructed from concrete after the tsunami of ’04 to reestablish the coral ecosystem that had been destroyed. The concrete provides an anchor for the reef to rebuild itself. All around you could see dead reef that had been destroyed by the tsunami. The Irish woman I was diving with had actually been on the island when the tsunami hit. She got really lucky because she was at a very low elevation in a poorly made building when the massive wave ...

... style hut. Waves pounding and fan above, very relaxing. Friday 10 July - The first full day here and Tim insisted we take the motor bikes out. I was extremely nervous, of cause Ziggy just jumped on and took off without a care in the world. Next moment we are riding 60 k around the island. It was fabulous. I loved it although I was a bit nervous at times on dirt and bumpy tracks. Most of the roads are sealed but you have to avoid the pot holes. I am fine on curves and ...

Full moon, rebirth and dying days

... for this were that it has friendly locals, is not too resort-filled or overdeveloped and has a good mix of low-key and a bit of night life and lastly stunning sunsets. All beaches are on the west coast as the east coast is mainly mangroves. It rained our first afternoon and we were tired from traveling, so it was not until our second evening that we discovered that the sunsets really were as good as we had heard. A two minute walk to Korner ...

... no place to stay, which is how most of the back-packers travel, since they only really have a general idea of where they want to go, alot of where they stay may relay on planning their journey along the way, so having no reservations is the best way, leaving yourself open to where you want to go to next, with no commitment. A really great way to travel. I told her about my great place, and she was open to checking it out. The Viking ...

... restaurants, bars and of course travel agencies. Then snorkling has been amazing. Much better then on the gulf side of Thailand. I saw a turtle, shark, all kinds of fish and even got stung by a jellyfish. The non lethal kind; I was informed by the boat captain. I've met a few really good people here and was given an aloe plant to soothe my sensitive burned skin. I hear Koh Lanta which is a nearby island ...

Wrapping up in Thailand

(Note: photos added to last couple of updates, if you feel like checking that out.) Sorry, this isn't gonna be fancy. Ko Lanta: Oh, lovely, lovely little Ko Lanta. It's what I was hoping other places in Thailand would be, but weren't: rather underdeveloped, somewhat wild, with incredible beaches scattered around that feel undiscovered (except for the garbage piled up in places). Sad to say that such a glowing report probably won't last long, as yet again ...

... season) so we played cards in the hotel lobby for the morning and afternoon. It cleared up a bit later on so we went for a walk and found a karaoke bar and decided we'd give that a go in the evening. Had a really nice but spicy curry in a local restaurant then made our way to the karaoke bar. When we saw what the girls who worked in the place were wearing and the look on their faces when they saw Lydia and Erin come in we knew the "Karaoke Bar" was just a ...
