Day 9 - A small hike

Since this was our first real day in town, we decided to take an "easy" hike to get used to the higher elevation. We started with a train ride up to the top of Gornergrat. This was another wonderful, cog wheel train ride up the side of the mountain. Taking us to our highest elevation yet, 10,285. We bumped around here for a good long while, enjoying a cup of hot chocolate and taking in all the different views, which included at least five glaciers.

We crossed the railway lines as the signposts indicated and climbed up a very narrow footpath on which a very large and wild alpine goat stood eating. This was a very narrow path and there wasn't room for both of us but I thought I could probably squeeze behind him; in fact, I thought if I got too close, he would move away. ... a really beautiful walk, nice and quite, we were able to get away from the tourists and enjoy the walk by ourselves. It took a little over 2 hours to reach the next point and then we jumped over to the other side of the gorge and walked down into the gorge which had some really nice views. We ended up walking for about 5 hours, and when hiking on rocks and uneven ground with streets shoes, by the end my feet were killing me, Emma had a couple of new blisters ...
