I couldn't believe it- in the time it would take to fly from Adelaide to Sydney, I'd wound up in a completely different country once again! Time to get used to seeing everything in German again! Yes, a stable government and currency, good infrastructure, and good trade with surrounding countries helps a lot too, but I think it's the people's industriousness and creativity in creating multiple sources of income is the most important puzzle piece. ... of the Roman Empire. I didn't think of Romans trudging up and across these mountain passes... Now there's still a trail following this ancient route. Looks very enticing. Suddenly I remember my feeling yesterday--the feeling that this Alps hike is starting to feel like routine--just a little bit. Maybe this is time to cut the trip short, veer back into Italy, and go do something else for a while. I know my ...
