After some online reconnaissance we ventured into the city today for a look around. We drove to a local train station and had no trouble buying day passes from a vending machine for €6 each. Parking was a little drama - the 'park n ride' we drove into closed at 9pm and there was a chance we'd be back later than that. So we parked on the street and stressed about getting a ticket (no, thankfully). Trains were comfortable, clean and convenient, and ran ...

The Federal Republic of Germany has 16 states (including the city-states of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen) and they include districts and then thousands of municipalities. Itinerary: Brisbane to Frankfurt on Thai Royal Silk. 20.5 hr plane time plus a 3.5 hr connection in Bangkok. Boeing 777-300ER first then an Airbus A380-800 to Frankfurt. Another 3 hr wait in Frankfurt then 65 min to Hamburg via a Lufthansa Airbus A319-100, 138 seats 3x3. Finally, arrive at Hamburg Flughafen at 10:05am local, 31 hours after leaving home. Some of the 777 middle seats were side-by-side, but most of them were isolated ...

... fields of yellow wheat glide by as we move further north. In Hamburg we have time for some good German sausage, but I feel ripped off when I have to pay 2,50 euro for a bottle of water. Just imagine the profit margin!

The next 5 hours a packed train brings us north, through Sleswig Holstein, not only memorable for its strife-torn history, but also because its cows, crossed with our Dutch variety, produced the world's most productive dairy cow, the Friesian Holstein. ...

... us the last few kms into town and then finally bid us farewell.

The first hotel was the Holiday Inn and we rocked up to reception, tired and sweaty, only to be told by reception staff that we would have to book 2 double rooms to accommodate us at an exorbitant price. Too practical for that, we cycled on into the night-we soon came across the Ambassador hotel, who thankfully had one family room left-so at 11:30 pm we entered our hotel room-completely ...
