... no-mori Park. That was the destination where my mam was eager to go. The toki is Japanese crested ibis and its scientific name is Nipponia Nippon, literally Japanese Japan. (Incidentally, Japanese national bird is not toki, but Japanese pheasant.) However, I heard that tokis were in the cage and visitors could see them from a distance. I worked with Shun Sawada in 1995 teaching English at Niitsu High School and had the pleasure of meeting his lovely wife, Suzuyo, many times as she taught me Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging. Such a beautiful home, delicious food and stunning Japanese garden and bonsai. A wonderful visit to Yahiko mountain and shrine and the seaside. A trip into Niigata city to Kobari Beach, Sea of Japan. Such kind ...

Leaving Tokyo around 9am we headed for then city of Niigata on the west coast, we had decided to spend a night in Niigata before catching the ferry across to Sado island the following day just to make things a little easier for a change. Arriving in Niigata the amazing tourist information staff booked us a comfortable 3 bed western style hotel (with an en-suit :D ) around 10 minutes walk away.

Wako Hotel whilst showing its age now would have been crème de la crème back ...
