... did not bode well! 1 miles past the last dwelling, a handwritten sign on a bit of old wood stated that the Hillside Hotel could be found over a train track on my left. I was immediately dismayed to find myself on a gravel/dirt track with no signs of life other than old collapsed shacks to show people actually lived here!! ... that they made a walkway around it, which was due to be opened by the Queen in 19....something, when she arrived to get her picture at the opening she stood in front of the sign a cut some of the letters out. So the picture that went out into the paper at the opening of the walkway was the Queen all dressed up in her Sunday best, next to a sign that at read "Mangina" and they say big Lizzy has no sense of humour. ... through the cave was fun. We were underground for an hour. The stalactites and stalagmites were very cool. The glow worms were awesome too. I was very bummed to not have my waterproof camera along.
There was a 15 meter belly crawl that was exciting and drenching. Laura thought about turning around but powered through it. All in all a good adventure and I think the kids had fun. It was definitely a unique experience.

... hope from the sight of a couple of people out running. But neither Port Waikato nor the coast had come into view as yet. Fortunately we did not have to worry about fuel as there was plenty in the tank; our Hiace also seemed to be coping remarkably well with the twists and cambers of the track as I kept up the speed in an attempt to arrive before dusk.
