Klaipeda

It took just over 3 hours to drive from Vilnius to Klaipeda with very light traffic. The drive is a little boring, but comfortable. The Magnisima Hotel is in the new (er) part of town within walking distance from the old town and with a secure parking lot in the rear. The room (#7) is very spacious and tastefully furnished. The street misses a couple of light poles, so gets a ...

Palanga & 1000 year Lithuanian celebration

... celebrations are being held. It is hard to find. I and many others go down some dead ends before finding the path. It is packed with thousands of people. A naval ship is decked out. Huge monitors show the performers who sing, dance and talk. The culmination is the national anthem, supposedly synced with spots all over the world. Very cool to participate in something so monumental for the Lithuanian people.

Beach weather at last

... speaking the language or just a cultural difference. Also, eye contact is virtually non-existent. It gives me a further feeling of separation. But, people in the hostels are pretty cool. Everything from students to retirees (mostly the former). Not many business type people (working or on vacation). In this stay, I met 4 med school students, 2 pre-law, 1 pre-Med, 4 Oracle Software developers from India, a PhD student in political science …

My back has been ...

Zemaitija NP - Lithuania

... know it was there. They built four silos, each housing nuclear missiles, each of which was 10x the power of Hiroshima or Nagasaki, and being in Western Lithuania, had enough range to reach anywhere in Europe or Turkey. It was mobilised, ready to launch on a few occasions during the cold war. In fact during that time the Russians had so many enemies (perceived or ...

... was spoken was when people from different countries needed a common language in order to communicate. I never could have imagined such an amazing beach in Lithuania of all places! I arrived in town without a place to stay. At the bus station there was a travelers info center where I made an inquiry and was given an address to visit that wasn't too far. The house was attractive and thankfully there was a teenage daughter that spoke enough English to where details could ...

Racing in Palanga

Ignore what we said about the worst campsite this beats the lot - toilets were holes in the ground, the shower was invented by the local made professor and was patented trust me when i say no one will by buying it!. As for Palanga it deserves better a great beach resort with loads to do and see, cheap and good fun for a few days or a week well worth a visit. While we were their they were holding a ...

Seduction on the beach

... We arrived in Palanga to find the first and only touts of the trip. I seemed to see people trying to convince people to stay at their houses all the time last summer (especially in Croatia), but not this year. The TI was closed today, so we scribbled down a ********** map based on one displayed outside the TI. Palanga is a small town so finding the guesthouse wasn't difficult. The Hotel Comfort Inn was a ...

Curonian Split

Today started bitterly cold. I don't think the hostel was heated :( Most of the hostels so far have been ace but with the heat in here I think I may have been better sleeping in the bus station next door (The location is fantastic though, almost in the parking lot of the bus station!). So it took me a bit to pull myself out of bed and brave outside. The town was actually quite pretty, I'd been warned that Klaipeda was a typical port town and ...

... they did, filling it right up to the door. Everyone waiting managed to get on. The people at the front, squashed right to the door, decided to lean on Christie the whole way, and every inch she moved they claimed it as their own. This wasn't much fun. We were glad that we were getting off at the first stop - Juodkrante, but this was still a half an hour ride. Now off the bus, we were able to breathe again. Juodkrante is a small town, very quiet, but charming. We had a street name ...
