perhaps suggesting some friction going on here weakening a warm inner-tube. A

The road took us deeper into Russian territory and we felt pretty good about it. The roads became poorer and poorer, to the point where we felt like we had arrived in a third world country. The going got tough and was surely proving to be a test of things to come.
