... were a quite underwhelmed. Once again, probably due to a lack of our own intoxication. Oh well, we had fun anyway singing the "irish drinking song" game from "Whose Line Is It Anyway."
The night ended back at the hotel, and we just decided to take it easy. I think we're all getting pretty tired of living out of backpacks and sleeping on trains. Speaking of trains, we have an early one tomorrow so goodnight all!
We emerged from our miserably long train ride exhausted, groggy, unshowered, and...freezing?! Apparently we were farther north than we had realized. Our second problem involved a the time. We stumbled out of the train station at around 630 am. Our hotel check-in time was 4 pm. We were able to dump our bags at the hotel, but we had to find somewhere to go for the next several hours. We grabbed some ...
Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan allmystrings... went to the US to study.
During the war, Isamu was set to a concentration camp.
After the war, he submitted his design for the Hiroshima Dome Museum, but his work was denied because he was "American".
One side he was accused to be Japanese, and the other side he was denied because he was American. I can only imagine how he was thinking of his own identity.
However, he ...
... excited to see another student who's studying about Ainu people. She set up a dinner with an Ainu sculptor and storyteller, Mr. Takashi Yuuki. Also, another student from Indiana, Shingo joined us. They were the members of the Indigenous Summit last year held right before the G8 Summit at Tohya Ko (Lake) in Hokkaido. 23 indigenous groups from all over the world gathered and discussed issues. They submitted a declaration to the participating nations. They told me ...
Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan beachmonkieAfter making it safely onto the ferry (ah yeah) i relaxed for the 18 hour trip. I spent the journey doing alot of people watching -Japanese families feeding seagulls from their hands on deck, everyone cracking open the beers first thing in the morning (but remaining civilised unlike the English ferries I:ve been on where carnage ensues!), the weird way that the Japanese queue (think they love it even more than the British do!) with the most extreme form ...
Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan lotsterWe were up really early during our first day in Sapporo -- couldn't sleep past 5:00. Thus, we decided to head out into the city and see what we could find for breakfast. Being a Sunday morning, the simple answer was not much! Most places were closed until about 7:00. We are staying in a part of Sapporo called Susikino which, while having a very affordable place for us to stay, is also the main nighttime ...
Sapporo, Japan schwinkle... island. It is the least populated of the 4 main islands, but Sapporo is the 5th largest city in Japan with a population of 1.85 million. Hokkaido is best known for its many national parks and ski resorts (FYI - the 1972 winter Olympics were held here). Sapporo is a little off the beaten path as evidenced by the fact that we saw very few tourists... actually only saw a handful of westerners in the 4 days we were up there. We were definitely a minority and stuck out - got stares and kids ...
