... light one last time but it was not to be. After our exhausting day we bravely woke up at 7am the next day to ski in the forest. The sky was a fairy tale blue in contrast to the virgin snow. Then it is time to say goodbye to our forest lodge and the lovely Artic life. After a week of dog-sledding, ice climbing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing ... and rolling in the snow then jump into an ice hole in -20c, we are ready for some sunshine and (ancient) ...
... probably lured to the much warmer brick and mortar building on the premises, which houses the toilets, showers, changing rooms and the breakfast lounge. We were able to explore the lobby, all the suites, the ice bar, and then I noticed the beautiful ice church. Considering it was the last day of our honeymoon, it was quite unfortunate to find out we could have held our wedding ceremony there instead!
... at about 20 degrees which allowed us to thaw out after spending time outside. We unpacked our luggage and then headed over to the "changing room" which is like a warm recreation room for all guests. Here we picked up cold weather gear that we were allowed to keep and wear throughout our entire stay.
Mark and I each received thick snow suits, snow boots, mittens and a balaclava. We had brought ski clothing with us but it wasn't warm enough. The boots and clothes that ...
Kiruna is much prettier than it sounds at first. The town is based around an iron mining site, so it's simply just a mining town. Surprisingly, the town attracts thousands of people from all over the world due to its location near some really great skiing resorts and lifts. Fun fact: the iron mine is undergoing an expansion and this the town is forced to be moved closer to the next town ...
... We had lunch at a small "resort" on an island on the lake. It consisted of a Sami tent and a toilet. Milosh made his famous salmon soup which was great given that the temperature had dropped to less than minus 5!
Sadly I can't include photos now, but I got some great shots.
Eventually we arrived at our overnight camp which is a basic log cabin in a remote area.
I'm having a great time and will finish this entry now because I'm almost asleep!
