We set off from Eureka knowing that we had a very long drive ahead of us and plenty of places to stop along the way. Three lagoons sit to the east of Eureka and Arcata and we seemed to take forever to pass them before the landscape turned to lush pastures and then on past the township of Fortuna and inland to reach the Humboldt Redwood State Park. No problem for Pat - he somehow designed and built an estate ...

... Next tasting was three select cheeses at Oxbow Cheese Merchant served with mmmm bread from Model Bakery. The Olive Press then treated us to a surprising variety of olive oils to sample followed by salami tasting at The Fatted Calf. We then walked several blocks with Maria pointing out interesting features while educating us about the history of the town ...

... Gate bridge (a symmetrical cantilever-suspension hybrid bridge) and played a major role in its completion. It was originally proposed in 1916, but had to overcome plenty of opposition. Sometime between 1925 and 1929 and several engineering studies later, it transformed into the suspension bridge design. It was finally approved in the early 30s, but didn’t open to the public until 1937 after years of construction and the great depression. This year marks its ...
