Shoppers Paradise in Hoi An

Took a 5 hour scenic drive this morning through the mountain range that separates North and South Vietnam. In the north there are four seasons like back home; in the south there are only the wet and dry seasons. The Hoi Van Pass we went through had spectacular scenery; the locals call it the pass of the ocean clouds. We stopped and saw some of the bullet holes and batteries in the old American bunkers used on the front line in the Vietnam war. Stopped at a seaside resort in the afternoon for ...

Da Nang

It's another tough day on our 6 week slog around South East Asia. We left Hue, our ultimate destination Hoi An. First stop was the city of Da Nang, for a visit to the museum of the Cham people - the former rulers of the middle part of Vietnam (from the 4th to 17th century). Then it was off to China beach for a walk - the wind was up so the waves were crashing on to the shore. Next stop was the Marble Mountains for a climb to see a Buddhist shrine in a cave and a pagoda. The weather all day ha...

Towers, Cocktails and Crepes

Today's tour is to My Son to see the Cham towers. These are a series of temple towers created by the Cham people between the 4th and 17th centuries. My Son is inland, close to the spine of mountains that make up the west side of the country and is deep in rain forest. To get there we travelled through villages that show the different aspects of Vietnam - the 3rd world nature and it's richness (it's very green and growing food here is not a problem). We passed huge areas of water - some of it ...

Now we are 12!

An entire day free. So,we've sorted out some bits, got 2½ million Dong, re-packed our bags and backed up the recent photos. We've also wandered around Hoi An's old centre, visited some of its historic building - a covered Japanese bridge, the history museum, another temple and a assembly hall. All of these buildings are 17th century with a mix of Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese influences. The weather remains both varied and consistent - varied in that today started bright and sunny but by m...

I´ve just arrvived in Hoi An and its 06:14 am and can't check in yet. Decided to go for a walk around and get some breakfast, its quite a nice little town. All the shops are exactly the same as eachother, they all sell the same stuff. We all went to a recommended tailor shop where you can get anything you want made up ti fit for you. I didn't fancy it though, to much hassle and they didn't seem to realise that they weren't able to give me exactly what i asked for ! Eventually got back to ...

... to Hanoi. We had a relaxing day renewing acquaintances with this lovely city and spent the night in the Lucky II Hotel in the Old Quarter. We walked around Hoan Kiem Lake, did some lunch, had some coffee, drank some beer, relaxed, and did some shopping. There had been some heavy rain forecast before we left Hoi An, but we were not worried because we had already had a full week of really heavy rain only three weeks previously, without mishap. That evening, Sang rang from Hoi An to ...

L'évocation du Vietnam s'accompagne inévitablement de quelques 'a priori' issus de l'histoire et des films et auteurs qui ont pu nous transmettre une certaine vision de cette contrée lointaine. ... Had some pho in a local restaurant, visited a couple of bookshops, bought a few things at Big-C, where Mark had to contend with young women smiling cutely as they pushed in front of him at the checkout queue. Of course, back at the paper shop, the order had not arrived, so they went back to Hoi An and waited for a later call.

On returning to Da Nang two days later, Mark had to discuss the price they had charged him at the paper shop for glue sticks, 5,000 VNĐ each ...
