Arrive Morelia

We stayed at the Villa San Jose - A fabulous boutique hotel overlooking the city - highly recommended! Villa San Jose Hotel & Suites locates at Santa Maria's Hill, at a short distance from downtown and the convention center in one of Morelia's most exclusive areas, conveniently close to main tourist attractions. We're proud to be the only special category rustic hotel in Morelia. Pink stone sculptures, tile roofs, colorful flowers and hummingbirds are the perfect getaway in the city. The ...

Dia de los Muertos

... murals, but it was the decorations that were truly memorable. Aside from the standard Halloween fare there were so many skulls and skeletons on display that it would have felt truly morbid in any other country than Mexico. In the evening we found a cheap bar serving bottles of Sol for just 10 pesos (about 50p!) Afterwards I went with a couple of friends to another lively place with two live bands playing on different floors and people dancing freely on the tables. We eventually ...

Madness in Michoacan

... Mexicans took us to a trendy club with an outside bar and a magnificent view of the city lights down in the valley below. I spent the vast majority of my weekend's money on one bottle of Bacardi, from which I got about two drinks as many others helped themselves. Still, we had a great time and it was definitely one of the coolest clubs I've ever been to. We headed back to the bus around 3am but it was only then that the real fun kicked off. Upon returning we consumed far too much of ...

My week

Well, I finally got my pictures up and got caught up to last Saturday. I don´t have any more pictures to add (see previous entry for explanation!), but here´s the rest of the story up to today.

Last Sunday I went to a different church for mass, then did some shopping and museum hopping. I was quite excited to discover that even though my speaking is still slow and laborious, I could read the explanations in the museums (Natural History, and Casa Natal de Morelos ...

Unpronounceable places!

... with masks of old men and women, grey hair, hats with long streaming ribbons and traditional sandals with wooden soles. They dance bent over with a cane to look old, but the intricate rhythms they make with their feet take lots of energy! A bottle of water in my bag leaked and my camera got wet so the pictures end abruptly with lunch - unfortunately none of los viejitos. I hadn´t budgeted for a new camera on this trip....(sigh)

A colonial gem awashed with narrow cobbled streets

... nicely tiled with cable TV and looked to have been recently refurbished. Their advertised rates were 280, 320, 380 and 420 Peso for 1, 2, 3 or 4 persons but without any problems they dropped the single rate to 220 Peso. Cleansed!

The kids are adapting well to life in Mexico, a few days ago Monique saw a cockroach so she killed it with her bare foot. James picked it up with a napkin and showed us. So, I guess we don't have to worry about the kids being skittish of bugs and may I say there are some pretty large ones here. One day we went to an English school run by a Christian family in a poor neighbourhood. They try to provide English, art and gym as an afterschool program at minimal ...

... to go on for quite some time (about an hour and a half to the top). Altitude, and probably not being in the best shape didn't help (and my nose was continuing to run incessantly). Here and there Luis would stop to give us portions of the natural history of the butterflies, such as the four generations that it takes in one year, and the theory behind how the monarchs find their roosts again the following year. The farther up we'd go, the more butterflies ...

Bus to Morelia...the sorts you meet along the way

Bus journey to Morelia, Thurs November 9th- spotted a Maccy Ds Woke up Thurs morn with a less-than-healthy stomach (definitely the brekkie the previous day) and with a five hour bus journey to Morelia ahead of me, the first stop was defo the bathroom. I was absolutely dying of cramps for the first hour on the bus and the normally rather irksome stops made by the Mexican 2nd class buses had suddenly became vital to my survival (at least the survival of my ...
